I found an interesting article which explains what insulin resistance is and what it does to your body - mainly extra weight around your tummy which increases your chances of becoming diabetic. This article is easy to understand and gives guidelines on how to reduce your risk of becoming diabetic and how to get rid of "love handles".

Wheat Belly
Over a half decade ago Professor Jared Diamond, in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book Guns, Germs, and Steel, famously wrote
“The adoption of agriculture, supposedly our most decisive step toward a better life, was in many ways a catastrophe from which we have never recovered.”
Dr Diamond was referring, of course, to the devolution of human health that took place as mankind suffered the corporal transformation driven by the mismatch between hunter-gatherer genes and an agricultural diet and lifestyle. Smaller stature, decreased cortical bone thickness, obesity, increased incidence of infectious diseases, dental caries, periodontal disease, vitamin deficiencies, and even famine – all common in agriculturists – were not, for the most part, the lot of pre-agricultural man.

I agree totally with you Perfesser. Any number of articles are available on the internet which examine the impact of "agriculture" on native people who, for generations had none of the "modern diseases", until they adopted the agriculture based diet. The introduction of "processed" food has further contributed to many "modern" diseases.

Over a half decade ago Professor Jared Diamond, in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book Guns, Germs, and Steel, famously wrote
Dental care is the forgotten part of a healthy lifestyle. But while its importance is often underestimated, the need for regular dental care can not be overstated. Our set of teeth will last us a lifetime with the proper preventative dental care. For the HIV positive patient, regular dental care is not only to maintain the health of your teeth but also your entire body. Poor oral and dental health can result in serious infections of the mouth, the teeth, and the entire body.
I just got a book called Lose the Wheat Lose the Weight

A good link and quick plain explanation of "Wheat Belly", lol. Thanks (by Perfesser » Mon Apr 09, 2012 4:05 pm)
I do note that Asian people exist mostly on rice and many live >100yrs.
There are rice farms even in Canada.
I wonder......
Too many carbs does seem to be the main culprit in Wheat Belly.
Reducing carbs/processed food/sugar, certainly helps get rid of your tummy!
Increasing the protein and going for walks after dinner yields good results in time.
Fresh caught fish and lean Beef do wonders to keep a trim tummy and healthy body.
In Sept/Oct, we pick a Northern Lake and go catch our year supply of Trout and Salmon, and other fish. Mmm!
What other ways are there to "Get rid of your tummy"?
Wheatbelly...another fad to buy into by the masses.....

That's just ridiculous. I don't see the difference between people who are pushing these type of things and conmen.

Rice is a dietary carbohydrate just like wheat, fyi. And in terms of life expectancy there are only 3 Asian countries in the top 30 for life expectancy (Japan, Singapore, South Korea). Reducing carbs and sugars works only because you are reducing calories. Protein contains the same calories per gram as carbohydrates (4 cal/g). Switching out fatty meat for leaner cuts will help you trim calories, as lipids contain around 9 calories per gram. Adding vegetables to your diet in place of meat or grains is usually helpful because they have a lot of water and fewer calories, not because of some pseudoscience someone wants to sell you.
Long story short, the way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume, end of story. There are many different ways you can go about it, but cutting specific foods or eating supplements is just snake oil and misinformation.
I am reading Jared Diamond's "Collapse" right now, about what caused the downfall of various civilizations... right now I'm on the chapter on Greenland, and how the vikings failed to adapt their livestock & farming to the local climate & conditions. There is a theme running through the book, basically, decadence and complacency leading to failure & starvation - when a society grows so wealthy that they forget what made them successful in the first place, and they (usually the elites) start to waste scarce resources on celebrations, war, shows of power/dominance and religion.
