Good Morning all,
We moved back to Ontario a few years ago to begin again. I wanted to be closer to more fishing, hunting and open space...and less people. I used to fish often, but never hunted and now going to learn. If anyone is interested, there is a "one stop" course at the end of Feb for Gun Safety and Hunters Safety I'll be attending. We have had a slow awakening, both of us learning how to question what we are presented in our world (and subsequently got rid of our TV) but now are learning the skills we need to be more self sufficient and less dependant on a job. We keep chickens, and that is awesome...we sell to two people and that pays for the feed so the eggs we eat are paid for. We gardened last year and in our small back yard, grew enough potatoes for the year (325lbs) and still have dried veggies and beans in the pantry. We are both interested in living a life of simplicity, and directly providing for ourselves and family/friends...looking at the ROI for work you do directly to say, feed yourself, is way better than working at a job and buying groceries.
I've learned to look at life as an experiment, and I'm not afraid (right now) to try and fail as this experience is precious and there is still a safety net to bounce back from. My wife is a bit more cautious, but usually comes along for the wild ride.
For a while I travelled back to Alberta to work up North but that shut down in 2008 and I haven't been back. I miss the money, but now our daughter is too old for me to be out of town, she wouldn't have it! Work for us in in town right now but I am networking to find work closer to land we have out of town. There has to be a farmer that would like help, even if it's pt. (actually, part time is all I want once I really get going)
My suggestion to everyone thinking of a move at a collapse time is...do it now. Something we didn't count on is most of our old friends we grew up with are gone or are way different, and making friends with people of our own age group has been tough as they have their groups and people can only maintain a certain number of real friends. Community is the number one necessity we will all need in the next 20 years. We've found two couples, but finding ones that are even close to open minded enough to look up from their latest gadget to see what is going on is almost impossible. Funny thing is, in town we've made 0 real friends...they have all been in the countryside.
I'm looking forward to meeting new friends on this site to build community in the region, sharing info that closely relates to North-western Ontario, and have fun doing it all.
One day, the lowly farmer will be King
One possibility we are looking at is moving to Northern Ontario. I grew up in Southern Ontario and then joined the military. Thanks to that I was able to see most of the other provinces and territories along with going abroad.
With that said we have narrowed our search for our home to either Northern BC or Northern Ontario.
You sound as though you and your family have your heads screwed on right and are doing all the right things and I am really glad that it is working for you.
Getting rid of the TV was a courageous thing to do and I salute you as most of us are addicted to that screen and what comes from it. I refuse to buy into all the BS the media feeds us without doing a lot of on-line checking. I find that newspapers and TV shows us what their owners want us to see (right or left wing opinion) and not the truth we are looking for.
Anyway before I go off on a tangent - I want to say WELCOME and hope you enjoy the site - I know that you have a lot to share with us and I am looking forward to reading your posts.
Stay strong, focused and determined.

Welcome from Eastern Ontario, I am new to the site as well, we have a small mixed farm, with a large garden, I am the full time farmer while hubby works off-farm full time and part time on 🙂 I look forward to reading your posts and hearing how things are going..

Hello and good day to you as well. I stopped watching TV last year, it is a mind altering and hypnotising invention after all. I love the north, Nipigon is my Fav place on earth. Like Ahab, I was in the Military and all over as well, so that says something about what I think of the North.
My buddies place is in the Kawarthas or I would be going farther north as well, time will tell. There are lots and lots of women here, so your wife will feel at home. They are all just normal people, no wackos here. except me 😉
cheers and welcome WR

PSands - you quoted his message but did not add in anything yourself. Sometimes the board does that by itself and not sure why.
