Hey folks, just registered here.
Been lurking for a while. My wife and I are just turning 50, with a 17 year old daughter. Living in what used to be a small city but I hate what it's become(must get OUT).
We're lucky enough to have a BOL cabin in the woods(southern Bruce Peninsula) for a long time now, no grid power, most of the comforts. Bought some land a couple of years back for a retirement homestead (12 acres, South Wellington) but we haven't done much of anything there as my wife hasn't been on board as much as she needs to be before we jump in with both feet. Getting better, I do think 2012 will be the year of action.
Been serious as a prepper for a couple of years, not so much buying as learning to grow my own(as much as I can in my postage stamp of a yard), harvest nature ( hunting for the first time in 20+ years).
More and more I see the need for community participation, so like a groundhog in February I'm peeking out of my hole.
Perfesser, great to have you on board. Sounds like you have bug out options covered. I agree that being self reliant for food is as important if not more so than stocking up.
I hope you get a lot out of the forum and also look forward to what you may have to offer others.
Thanks very much for the welcome.
I'm familiar with Sepp (it's Holzer BTW) and especially the work Paul Wheaton is doing(richsoil.com, permies.com). It particularly appeals to me as I've always tried to apply a zero maintenance kind of approach to my systems.
As for the BOL's, my father did all the work on the first, deserves all the credit, a man WAY ahead of his time. The second.... I wanted a place I could have a runway to fly a plane out of.... may never happen but I'll never stop chasing my dreams....
I never could spell any good, sorry, but he is awesome. yes the permies forum is good too
Welcome.
Glad that you decided to poke the ole head up out of the hole and say hello.
It sounds like you are taking the right steps to getting off the grid.
I too like you do not like how things are going with our society. From small towns to big cities it is all becoming one big mess.
My wife and I are going out this summer and are looking for land to buy so that we can build our "retreat."
We live in BC right now but do not care where we find the land that best suits our purpose as long as it is in CANADA.
I was in the military and have traveled all over the world and believe that Canada is the best place to be especially if/when the SHTF.
Best of luck and I look forward to your future posts.
