Have Scythe. Will Travel. (Its the sign of a man)
Hold that thought for a moment .
I came in to cool down after about 4 hours of Rolling Doodles. See previous post on SHTF haying. http://internationalpreppersnetwork.net/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4073
Mrs C5 Turned to me and said," August 24th and 25th, there is an event on scything hay in New Ross Nova Scotia. The first day is workshops on all things scythe related. The next day is ...more demonstrations and the Maritime Hand Mowing Championships."
I looked at the article. learn blade peening, comparing blades, hay stacking, threshing, grain harvest, Mowing with oxen...." Hunny, I think we should go to this.....I REALLY think we should go to this... I REALLY REALLY......". One of the things I like about Mrs C5 is not needing to convince her WHY we should do a road trip of post apocalyptic skill development workshops and consider it a Date. "I think we will stay at a motel" she replied.
Thoughts developed from there to....I should post this event on NS Preppers network to.....What a damn good excuse for a prepper meet up...With a significant SHTF Trade (in more ways than one) skill to be learned.
I couldn't find the schedule on line but this one has the phone numbers for registration or more information. Camping is available.

It had been on my list of objects I want to leave my son. A rifle and crate of rounds. A quality Sword...and a Quality Scythe. Really.
It dawned on me that being part of a scything team would be a usefull trade in a world with sudden gas shortages and almost no farmers with hoarse drawn cutters anymore. Especially for those that may not have much or their own farm (and want to show up with a skill that is valuable to someone that does). A scythe is an inexpensive perchase....and damn cool collectable. But having one and actually knowing how to use it are two different things. Thus being able to tack up a note at what ever meeting post will arise in the aftermath.

Good video. The 92-year old at 1:34 used to kill, scald and halve my pigs for me well into his 70's.
Today, I see a nice write up about this year's competition in the October 2013 Rural Delivery
"A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences." - Proverbs 22:3
"The man who has a garden and a library has everything." - Cicero
I saw it too. Havent got around to reading it though. Farmgal asked me to give a report on it so Ill write about it next week.
