Any one know what the winds speeds have to be before they close the skyway? I just spent an hour trying to find out. I don't want to be in Burlington today if there is a chance the skyway will close. The last time it closed it took me over 4 hours to get home.

Thanks

I don't think it is just wind speed that is the criteria. It would also be direction and sustained VS gust speed. Pretty much impossible to set a limit I'd think.

I went searching for your answer oldschool since I was interested in the question and wondered if there was a set criteria for closures. This is the best I could rustle up:

“The other big thing is wind on the skyway...When the winds hit roughly 60 km/h we’ll put up a sign that says 'strong winds on the skyway, drive carefully.' Once it gets close to 80 or 100 km/h an hour, we put the severe wind warnings up,” explains MacKenzie.

I do believe it is like justabear said: It's totally conditional on the overall speed direction and other contributing factors that might prompt them to make the decision to close.

Hope that helps in the future, I would assume the same or similar criteria is set for the St. Catharines bridge as well.
