I just finished writing an email to one of my members about this. I'm glad I have the opportunity to post it here:

what are your thoughts on the Mayan Calender or the possibility of a solar flare occurring?
Zero. No one has special powers that can predict the future. This includes ancient civilizations that also believed the world was flat and that lightning was a sign from a superior being(s). To clear your mind from a rational and logical point of view have a look at this FAQ by NASA: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html

With respect to the Mayan Calender: There is a lot of hype about the 21st. If you understand how the calender works then you'll understand that it's simply the end of a cycle. A new time cycle begins as soon as the old one ends. Many people have a synonymous belief that something is going to happen that day, however, the basis for these beliefs stem from superstition, irrational thoughts, dreams, visions, hearsay, 'feelings' and even alien or unexplainable realms. If you want to believe you will find a reason to support your belief system. Unfortunately, many people do and they use this fear as their vehicle to drive them into preparedness. There is no evidence to suggest anything will happen that day. If you believe or think otherwise then ask yourself 'why' you believe that it's case. I'm confident people will find no evidence to support their belief. They just 'feel' it to be true. It's like the same as people believing in Big Foot. There is no evidence yet people still want to believe so they'll find ways to justify the belief system in their mind even if the basis for this is irrational.

With respect to solar flares: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( http://www.noaa.gov/ ), which is the American government and NASA's source for space weather, stated that they can see a solar coming from about 3 days before it actually occurs. The sporadic nature of solar flares, based on my own research through various credible sources, leads me to believe that we really don't know what could happen. The sun has it's own cycle which runs about every 11 years. We are entering something called the solar maximum which see's more activity with respect to solar flares. This doesn't mean that a solar flare is going to hit the earth and cause an EMP. We don't know. No one does. NOAA can accurately see one occurring about 3 days in advanced. Everything else you've ever heard in this regard is false and/or misleading. That's it.

If you're worried about the Mayan Calender don't be. I highly doubt anything is going to happen. If you're worried about solar flares you can sign up for space weather alerts through the Space Weather Prediction Centre here: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ , however, we'll likely here about it on the news a couple of days leading up to it - but again, this is something that is highly unlikely to occur according to scientists that have studied it's effects for years.

NASA held a 500 seat symposium last spring on the possible danger that could happen during this solar maximum. They are predicting that this could be the worst (and already has) in 200 years. This symposium was not open to the public, only to emergency response planners from around the world. If NASA says that there is a fair possible chance that a major magnetically aligned CME could hit us, then I have a tendency to worry. Between now and May will be the telling time if we have to worry about it or not. Until then, I'm keep my eye on the space weather forecasts.

I just gave an interview yesterday to The Canadian Press that touched on this. When asked, I told the interviewer that our members were not concerned about this beyond what believers may do that day. Glad to see that I was right. I spent most of the interview explaining how preppers were normal people just like everyone else, who just take precautions to be able to provide for themselves and their loved ones in the face of a disaster. I am anxious to see the article and hope that the point gets made that we aren't the whacko nutjobs some have portrayed us to be.
See you all Dec.22nd!

Truly, if 2000 years from now someone found one of our calendars, would they think that we thought the would was to have ended on December 31, 2012?
I already have things booked to do in January, I don't have time for the end of the world. 🙂

If a giant coronal mass ejection hits the earth and destroys our GPS satellites and electrical infrastructure exactly on Dec. 21st, I'll eat my had. With ketchup. Not on youtube because that won't exist anymore. You'll have to see me do it in person.

If we get hit by a massive CME, I'll have to take it on credit that your hat will be eaten, as all the power will be gone. 😈

OMG There were two very compelling images one of a dog and the other of three beautiful cats looking on through a window as Christians en masse rose to the heavens. You just know what those poor animals were thinking "Who is going to open the can now???"

As this seems to be an great opportunity for non Christian preppers I have to jump in. Sorry Redneck Survivalist I'll do it for $5.00 (paid in advance of course). Act now and I'll also throw in some flea powder. But wait if you take advantage of this generous offer TODAY you will also get individualized paracord collar for your beloved pet.

Now that is an offer that is hard to beat! 😆 😆 😆

You might want to change things up a bit. Pets can eat a lot. I'd go with something like:
Pay me $5.00 per week for every week you want your pet to eat after you're gone.
After that, all bets are off.

NASA had stated that some time next year that there is supposed to be a massive ejection enough to bring down power grids.
