I just finished writing an email to one of my members about this. I'm glad I have the opportunity to post it here:

what are your thoughts on the Mayan Calender or the possibility of a solar flare occurring?
Zero. No one has special powers that can predict the future. This includes ancient civilizations that also believed the world was flat and that lightning was a sign from a superior being(s). With respect to the Mayan Calender: There is a lot of hype about the 21st. If you understand how the calender works then you'll understand that it's simply the end of a cycle. A new time cycle begins as soon as the old one ends. Many people have a synonymous belief that something is going to happen that day, however, the basis for these beliefs stem from superstition, irrational thoughts, dreams, visions, hearsay, 'feelings' and even alien or unexplainable realms. If you want to believe you will find a reason to support your belief system. Unfortunately, many people do and they use this fear as their vehicle to drive them into preparedness. There is no evidence to suggest anything will happen that day. If you believe or think otherwise then ask yourself 'why' you believe that it's case. I'm confident people will find no evidence to support their belief. They just 'feel' it to be true. It's like the same as people believing in Big Foot. There is no evidence yet people still want to believe so they'll find ways to justify the belief system in their mind even if the basis for this is irrational.

With respect to solar flares: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( http://www.noaa.gov/ ), which is the American government and NASA's source for space weather, stated that they can see a solar coming from about 3 days before it actually occurs. The sporadic nature of solar flares, based on my own research through various credible sources, leads me to believe that we really don't know what could happen. The sun has it's own cycle which runs about every 11 years. We are entering something called the solar maximum which see's more activity with respect to solar flares. This doesn't mean that a solar flare is going to hit the earth and cause an EMP. We don't know. No one does. NOAA can accurately see one occurring about 3 days in advanced. Everything else you've ever heard in this regard is false and/or misleading. That's it.

If you're worried about the Mayan Calender don't be. I highly doubt anything is going to happen. If you're worried about solar flares you can sign up for space weather alerts through the Space Weather Prediction Centre here: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ , however, we'll likely here about it on the news a couple of days leading up to it - but again, this is something that is highly unlikely to occur according to scientists that have studied it's effects for years.

NASA had stated that some time next year that there is supposed to be a massive ejection enough to bring down power grids.

Be careful about what you read on the internet. The link you provided is not from NASA, but just an article that references something they put out in 2006. Indeed the solar maximum is 2013, but we are already into it now. This is not a reference to any singular solar event as they have no way of predicting specific flares or CMEs beyond a couple days in advance, and then only in probabilities.

We'll let's take a second to review here. I gave you three references that are very, very recent. 1 from NASA and 2 from NOAA. 2 of the most highest credible sources on the planet. You're refuting that with an article written this past August originally based on information that's 6 years old. An author named "Sylvia Cochran" that has no credibility that I could find and talks about aliens ( http://screen.yahoo.com/blogs/butterfinger-barmageddon-news-network/tunguska-event-alien-evidence-235718444.html ).

Nevertheless, let's look into this a bit further. Sylvia Cochran's article is based on old information which states that scientists claim a large coronal mass ejection is coming in 2013. The information was revised in 2012 by NASA. If the information keeps getting revised based on new information and/or methods then the old information or original prediction was inaccurate. How do we know the new information isn't? Perhaps after 2013 they'll bump it up to 2025 - near the end of the next cycle?

Let's agree on this (And I'd be happy to provide references to Heliophysicists and Electrical Engineers to whom I have direct contact with):

Does the sun have a cycle? Yes. Every 11 years. As low as 9 and as high as 14.
Are we in a solar maximum? Yes. This means there will be more solar activity compared to the beginning of the cycle.
Can NOAA or NASA predict solar flares? Yes. But only about 3 days before it actually happens.
Can NOAA or NASA predict coronal mass ejections? Yes. I don't know the exact time frame but I know they can't predict them months in advance.

What does this mean about Sylvia Cochran's article? Nothing. It's useless dribble specifically designed to entice you into believing something might happen. A fear-based approach to what I'm slowly finding out to be is a community of people that constantly worry and search for articles like these - to fulfill a self-feeding delusion that something is going to happen. I could use all her same sources and write an article that says "We don't know what will happen" and it would have just as much weight as hers.

Have scientists made 'bad' predictions in the past regard solar activity? Yes.

Myth: There are scientists who can predict the probability of a severe solar storm or nuclear EMP over a 5 or 10 year time frame.
Fact: Most of the attempts by the world's best solar scientists to predict solar activity over a 2 to 10 year time frame have proven to be quite embarrassingly wrong. The prevalence of severe solar storms on time scales of centuries is much better known. In the spring of 2011, several noted solar scientists predicted that the forthcoming solar maximum would likely fizzle, and that we may be heading for something like the Maunder Minimum of a few centuries ago or the more recent Dalton Minimum. Shortly after these predictions were reported in the news media, the sun began emitting a number of M and X class solar flares. Fortunately, none of the stronger solar flares were aimed directly at the Earth, but this increased solar activity did demonstrate the considerable difficulty in relatively short term predictions.

Besides all of this - we don't even know if it's going to point in our direction. We don't know. That's just it. No can one predict the future. This includes psychics and ancient texts. If you believe otherwise then you need to question rational evidence supporting your belief(s). We can only make logical assumptions based on the evidence that we've previously seen and/or demonstrated. There's no way that anyone (including scientists) can predict large coronal mass ejections or large solar flares months in advance.

So instead of worrying about something that may never happen just prepare for anything when you can and enjoy your life.

Massive solar flare / CME : don't worry, if it did happen they would not be able to predict it. Nasa can only estimate the chances of flares and coronal holes a few days ahead

Exactly,They can only tell you what is happening not will happen. when they say that there is a CME on its way, then its already on it way. They can only say to a percentage at what magnitude that we will be hit with it or just a near miss. Mind you we have a MUCH better chance of being hit with a CME then we have of winning a lottery. 😈
