one more suggestion.. don't by a chinese SKS unless you absolutely cannot afford more. I highly recommend a russion sks. I paid $175 for my ruskie sks with bayo in unfired condition. Russians or Yugoslavian made sks are superior to the Chinese

SFRC has SKS soft points 125 gr for about $12 a box. They're about equal to the venerable 30-30.

If you want to hunt bigger game with the hunting rifle in Southern Ontario, you can only go up to max caliber .270.

I don't think so... I think during small game season you cannot have a rifle above .275

A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of
greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle

Nice rifle, I see it comes with the bayonette too!
HOWEVER, my needs are simple...
12 guage pump
.22 lever or semi auto
hunting rifle (caliber yet undecided)
How well would this package fill my hunting needs...
Wooded area, with some open fields...
up to 300yrds range
whitetail deer, some small bear, rarely moose.

An excellent caliber for deer, bear and adequate for moose is the Winchester .270. It is flat shooting and packs a lot of punch. You can handload a wide range of ammunition for different game and situations. Price is reasonable for a good rifle and ammunition is easily obtained.

I called a place 2 weeks ago and did my PAL course on Tuesday and Wednesday. It cost $305 for the 2 day course for non-restricted and resticted licenses. I did it at Ready Aim Firearms in Oakville. They have it streamlined there, so it only takes about 2 months. The owner is a former CFO (Chief Firarms Officer), so he knows all of the hoops to jump through to get it done fast 🙂

With the price of ammo I'm paring down my center fire collection.
.308 and 7.62 x 39 can be had relatively cheaply compared to other calibers as there's plenty of surplus to be had. Less common stuff is just too expensive to shoot often enough.
For a new shooter I would try to stick to those two calibers as a starting point. 7.62 x 39 is probably fine for medium game to 150 or 200 yards, and so cheap you'll shoot often (though I'll admit I don't own one) .308 if you need farther(this is what I've settled on as my standard).

I've got a Ruger 10/22 waiting for me. It holds 22LR rounds, which are about 3 cents a round. Packs a nice punch, and I can throw a bunch of rounds downrange and not have to worry about price 🙂

hey everyone just found this wed site and i am happy to see so many preppers like my self here in Ontario. I seen Canuck_prepper's post looking for like minded Christian people. and I would not mind talking to you more. I am waiting for my restricted to come in but hit a snag they said i was missing something which i have no clue what i know i sent everything in right. I know ill get it squared away soon. Dose anyone here have any good ideas of a good prepper gun. Right now all i own is a remington 870 tactical shot gun. I do want to get an AR i was looking a the norinco cuz its cheep and in a social colaps i dont plan on getting into a war besides haveing to defend my family if the situation appears i just dont really trust anything made in china. Whats your thoughts?

I'm personally of the opinion (maybe share more of the American mindset) that we ought be as well armed as we can be as citizens first and foremost and then as preppers second. In my opinion, while I used to have my restricted I opted for non restricted firearms because I hate the thought of leaving a larger paper trail then required - granted there still is (can/may be) a paper trail with non restricted. I went for 'loop hole' non-restricted firearms - you pay slightly more (or in some cases quite a bit more)but there are some serious benefits that go along with that. In this category I highly reccomend focusing on semi-autos that can be legally loaded with 10 rounds such as:
- Keltech Su 16.... 223 (takes standard AR mags) I think this looks like a great firearm - check out NUTNFANCYs reviews on youtube.
-Keltech sub 2000 ... pistol rounds
- CZ 858 .... ...,.. wolverine arms sells conversion kit/magwell adapter to take 10 round mags.
-Benelli mr1
-XCR

I especially like the cz .... very simple battery of arms and just a well built firearm. The ergos on the base model suck but can be altered with fab defense furniture. I don't have the chrome lined barrel - unfortunately on mine.

Also interesting tidbit - I went to buy 10 round AR mags and I found these stacked AR 10 rounders - They are 2 mags that have a wedge connector between them and when they are joined together (butt end to butt end) look almost identical to a 20 rounder --- and indeed they hold 20 rounds - only the 2 mags feed from each end - so you have to eject and flip it over. They fit nicely in mag holders and work decently from what I can see so far.

Anyways... just a few more thoughts to ponder

If you want to get real proficient with the 870 Rem., take it to the skeet range. Then you can hit the doubles 3/5 times than you getting good. Its the quick load and aim, that will define if you can shoot at multiple targets with any luck of hitting them.

Do NOT confuse a Chinese military SKS with the civilian version. There is no comparison. A Chinese military surplus SKS is every bit as good as their Russian military counterparts. This is what the link I posted for the Marstar deal is.

FYI, the SKS has a floating pin and I replaced it today with a spring firing pin so you will not get any slam fires - wrote about it on my blog here: http://rednecksurvivalist.com/index.php/entry/making-your-sks-safe-murray-s-firing-pin

Also, if anyone wants to see my SKS I just cleaned all the cosmoline off and oiled it up and like i said put the new firing pin in and put it back together, here it is!

I picked up an SKS this year, a 1950 Russian tula with a chromed lined barrel and with an original spring loaded firing pin.
The 1950 Russian bolt is different then the 1951....to what ever year they stopped making them.
The pin can be used in any other SKS but the bolt and carrier
can not. If you are ever looking for parts make sure you check the year it was made. love the SKS

Nice looking gun Rednecksurvivalist

That's awesome. I love the SKS - extremely rugged well made gun and IMHO at least here in Canada with the laws we have, the very best you can get for a bug out weapon in a total SHTF scenario. As well, either getting one like yours that has the spring loaded firing pin (why they took that out I'll never understand) or getting the aftermarket one is a must.

As we are preppers, I have researched something I find important and that is if you can use the aftermarket tapco high capacity mags and load them with stripper clips to save weight on your person carrying more bullets on you AND have more bullets in the gun. This of course won't work while there is still a government, but if the government and its laws should ever break down this will be important (the tapco mag is restricted to 5 rounds but it's ridiculously easy to remove the spacer at the bottom of the mag putting it to full capacity, NOT to be done unless TSHTF of course).

The tapco mag needs a small modification to be able to do this. I'll post pictures and stuff on how to do it if it works.
