I beleive the Remington VTR Predator is restricted... 🙁
Not once you add on a muzzle brake. We have two in our store, both with muzzle brakes and both are non-restricted.
My mistake. I spoke too soon. Sorry JAB, you're right. The VTR is restricted, I was thinking about another rifle that uses AR magazines but isn't based on an AR platform. 😳 I'll shut up now.
Those who are unwilling to defend freedom, will become unfree.
Robinson arms makes very nice Tactical firearms many non-restricted comes with a high price tag. Best "bang" for your buck I would say CZ 858 many options to upgrade

JR carbine comes in 45 acp ,40 s&w,9mm luger. mine is a 9mm ,ammo is cheap and out of a carbine it has similar power to a .357mag. Could be used for personal protection and with well placed shots can take from squirrel to deer. Price of ammo is important because you should be experienced with a weapon before you rely on it.
Thanks Whisperz
I was finally able to find a JR 9 MM in stock in Toronto at Al Flahertys Outdoors Store
Happy with it on the range , 9 round s to sight in then 25 rounds in a 3 inch group right out of the box
Thanks for the lead Hobo
Don't you DARE "shut up" ... Your input is WAY too valuable here...LOL
AGREED !!
plus everyone makes mistakes now and again, we do not use Google or YouTube for everything, we live and learn in real time.
the AR is a great weapon but there a lot of weapon out there that are just as good if not a hole lot better !!.
dont get me wrong i like the AR there a great short lengh weapon and about two year ago i got to shoot one and it works well.
Right now all i have is 22long semi auto good for hunting and could be used for home defense (22mag or 22/250 ever better). i also have a 12 ga. shot gun great for hunting and home defense with most new shot guns you can shoot slugs along with shoot and not have to change bearrels and a 410ga slug. pump action shot gun trust me a 410 ga. shoot gun well get you if your hiding on the other side of a wall from me trying to attack me, all these gun have one thing incommon it easy to get bullets/shells for them you can walk into any store that carry's shells/bullets and find it in stock in large amounts..and much cheeper .
i like the AR and would own one ...but i know i can depend on the weapons i have and get the job done what ever that job is !!.
again just my though and another way of looking at things depending on what firearms license you hold
Sarnia prepper
Hows it goin, The nice thing about the JR Carbine is they are non restricted
They have the AR look and amunition is fairly cheap, I have a 22 cal, 12 gauge and 223 already just wanted something that would make people think twice in a shtf situation
Also as a retired service member wanted a new challenge for the range
Thanks Hobo
AR are a interesting weapon, the thing i like the best now with AR is you can get them in almost any caliber you want now !!! so there almost worth the cost and time that goes into getting a resticted license...
If you want non restricted, value for money regarding initial purchase and ammo, consider the SKS. You can update it cheaply with a tapco stock.
The AR family is ok, I have a reasonable amount of trigger time on that platform but it's not the holy grail. As mentioned, the CZ858 is nice but costs more.
Just personal preference but I would avoid a pump action 5.56mm. If and It's a big if.. you need to actually use the rifle.. someone who has a semi automatic and knows how to use it can deliver a lot of rounds in your direction while you cycle a pump system, plus everytime you cycle it, you are going to have to re aquire your target.
My first post here and just my 2 cents.

That's exactly what I did. And if you know what you are doing you can easily modify the 5 round detachable mag to what it was originally intended to be but only for a situation with a change of law or a world without rule of law of course.
The SKS offers very inexpensive 30 cal ammo (in military surplus), is extremely reliable, is common and there are a TON of tactical upgrade parts for it at a good price.
Plus if you ever had to use it, it hits hard.
It's better to prep for something that may never happen than not prep for something that does.

Greetings:
Just remember to keep a couple of things straight. In Canada, all semi-auto rifles are restricted to 5 rounds capacity. If the rifle shoots a pistol cartridge the law does not apply or if it is a .22 cal rimfire.
I have both a Mini 30 and an SKS. Why? They both shoot the same ammo (7.62x39) and as stated earlier, you can get ammo fairly cheaply. Again, this is military Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) also known as hardball. Not the best for hunting and true hunting rounds are much more expensive. Both are a true pleasure to shoot. But, I believe in simplicity. If I ever had to bug out, it's the SKS, mini 30 and my 12 gauge pump. I also have a preloaded box with each kind of ammo.
Cheers,
One last thing, the surplus FMJ ammo can be very dirty to shoot because of the poorer quality of the powder (usually eastern Europe manufacture). So, clean, clean, clean.

That's not quite right. If you shoot a centerfire rifle that 'happens' to accept a pistol mag you can get away with legal 10 round mags. I have an xcr and plenty of 10 rounders. Same with the SU 16, benelli mr1, sub 2000, and jr carbine and the cz 858 with magwell adapter. I think this is a serious advantage for shtf.
oops.. sorry eleven-to-one... sorry... didn't see that you mentioned that already.
There are also 357 and 44 mag. rifles if you want to have pistol/rifle ammo. In fact most of the high powered pistol ammo has a rifle that will fire them.
