wow, I had no idea when I started this thread that it would hit such a nerve in people.
I have been sitting back and reading all of the comments trying to sort it all out. Like all things, I think this is shades of grey. The theory may sound good but the practice has not been practical/applyable...not sure the correct word to use.
thanks all, I have been learning a lot
@ Mokonotora, I completely disagree with you. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even you. I don't believe that Anyone on this board is attempting to force any opinions, simpler life, or dream on you or anyone else..... and I don't need to be told to move to Greece or Spain or Portugal or Ukraine....thanks
Try to 'Chill' abit or maybe I should say, warm-up abit......we are all friendly...... everyone's opinion or statements are not meant to make you feel threatened.....Peace
I think there's some confusion between living simply and more self reliant.
Austerity doesn't scare me. I may use what they're peddling today but I don't need it. And I'm sure as I become less reliant I'll need it less tomorrow.
You can retire whenever you want if you're off the treadmill of more stuff and more debt.

Amen!
Knowledge is power. Practised knowledge is strength. Tested knowledge is confidence.

Well put Gravlore.
I know that this is an old thread but after watching the videos and reading all the comment I felt compelled to throw in my 2 cents worth (oops I guess that will be 5 cents worth in the future).
We live in a society and in most respects a dam good one. For societies to function there have to be rules. Without rules anarchy reigns. As a society we have chosen to operate under system of Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments. As a society we have endowed these governments with the right to Legislate and create laws, the rules that ensure the continuance of our society. Laws to which we must all abide. All not some!
We may not agree with all that a particular level of government does or how they perform. However we are given a way to change the way that we are governed. We are guaranteed this by the laws that our society has created. We are free to vote in elections at all levels of government. We can change things if we want to. However we have to live with the wishes of the majority. That is what democracy (or in our case a constitutional monarchy) is all about.
The freeman on the land movement is dangerous in so much as they believe that they do not have to play by the rules while at the same time using same rules to benefit themselves. This group may be a product of the times in which we live but they are never the less perilous in so much as they show society fraying at the edges.
To me they are anarchist group with a fancy and deceptive name. As someone poetically wrote in a previous post "they are parasites on the face of society". So I guess the best description for them would be parasitic anarchists! 😀
