As some of you know, my mom has stage 4 lung cancer. It has been about 15 months since we got the news. She was told she would be lucky if she made it to last February. When the gardening season started, she decided that she wanted a garden. So when it was cool enough I took her to her local garden centre for some plants and seeds. Under her direction, I planted everything.
We have set it up so that she can just turn the hose on first thing in the morning when it is cool enough. Its still 5 steps to do so but she has been able to manage that so far.
As for the weeding and general picking of the produce, that’s my job. However she has gone against my request and has gone out and picked a few tomatoes and zucchini early in the morning when its cooler and less humidity. She found that something was eating her zucchini and came up with an interesting solution – putting a clean knee high stocking on them. The knee high expands to allow it to grow and the critters have not eaten one since doing it.
So here a few pictures to share my mom and my gardening adventure this year.
Wonderful idea and garden...hope your mom is taking it easy and feeling alright! Take care!
Very impressive Oldschool! You are a wonderful gift of a daughter to your Mother!
Those zucchinis are huge: have you ever tried them BBQed? Slice lenghtwise, brush on italian dressing or other oil, then bbq. And need I say Zucchini Bread!
It's not been easy to maintain a garden with all the lack of rain and extreme heat this year 🙂
That is wonderful old School, I'm glad you and your mom can share this adventure, we call gardening, and sounds like you are both enjoying it!

You zucchinis make mine look like pencils. Nice garden!
i work on an inpt oncology unit. . . that means i only see oncology patients at their worse, some go home when we fix their current symptoms, and some have really great stories to share about their time and how they have used it. but it's stories like this that make me very sad, and very happy. . .these are the things you'll never forget, and will inspire people more then you'll ever know.
keep it up, (and i love it when people do things they shouldn't like that, but only when bad things don't happen (i see a lot of the bad things too). . . love the stubborn spirit of the older generation 😀 )
adsum. . . aut viam inveniam aut faciam
