Hi, I'm Dori_Be. Call me Dori! 🙂

I'm absolutely thrilled to have found a forum that caters to localized areas, how brilliant!

A bit about myself. I've been a prepper for several years. Finally found a wonderful man who has "like" interests to share the dream with. We have a small chunk of land in the bush on which we will be building our homestead on this summer (hopefully it will be done by next winter) 😉 House will be off grid but we plan to have the garage hooked up for posterity sake. In fact, we had our first load of wood delivered this week. It will be a stackwall (cordwood) house. So now we are really stoked!!! We did some experimental gardening out there last summer and the results were very propmising. We threw around a few tomatoe seed and onions in the middle of June and had very productive yeilds, so we feel we have a little micro-climate all our own, so that's cool.
At present we are in a bitty little apt in a small city, saving and planning until snow melts. My present canundrum is where to stash stocks that I buy on special. A girl has only so much "under the bed space" in an apt!!! 😆 Oy! Hang it from the ceiling in fish nets??? Hmmmm... 😕

Anyway that's a bit about me. Happy to be here!!

Welcome Dori, This is a very good forum, friendly and informative. It's worthwhile to read all posts even from way back as there is a lot of really good info.
I'm looking forward to purchasing land and moving up north myself hopefully sooner than later.

Howdy Dori,
perhaps you could ask a friend with a property or larger garage to let you store some things there?
Steer clear of the storage unit route, it is just too expensive actually. Look around for storage containers and put on on your property. They can be used for living and keeping things safer as well. Storage units are everywhere, and go rather cheap. Try looking at large train yards, shipping yards, for example The Soux or another large port. In TO they are dirt cheap, plentiful and come in many configurations all for under 1.5k

What part of the North? Northern Ontario is my Favourite part of Canada.

Perfesser, there is a time out built in I think. For long posts I normally do them in an offline program, then copy paste. I have had posts disappear before as well.

Thanks for the welcomes! 🙂
I'm in the Thunder Bay region, our property is somewhat remote but I'm SO looking forward to being out in the bush again! I lived down in the Ottawa area for a few years, and Yes, nothing beats the North!

A couple questions are you using pine ,spruce, or poplar for your cordwood house, I have come across homes built with this method nothing wrong with this method just keep your basement or crawl space at least 2-3 feet off the ground , and lots of overhang on the roof .and use the best sealers you can afford ...not telling you what to do, just suggesting from my own experience and knowledge .....whish you's great luck building your home .... if you are stuck with something while building and i can help just ask .........Logger1

Hi Logger and Thanks!
We had found a good supply of cedar (10 - 12ft lengths) Awesome deal we couldn't afford to pass up on. We were on the fence about building a basement for a while but I think we have settled on a basement. Our property is quite sandy. Hubby has been building houses (by trade) for nearly 30 yrs now (stick frame), although this is his (our) first cord wood house. It won't be huge, just comfy with everything we need for self sufficiency.
Good thought about the overhangs ( I forgot about that ) Our plan that we've chosen dosen't have long ones but we can improvise.
LOL I get pooped out just thinking about the upcoming summer!!

I think Logger is giving great advice.

Try looking up a book called "Building a Low impact roundhouse, by Tony Wrench"
good step by step instructions, diagrams are ok, the story is great. He gives pros and cons, and I am reading the 2nd edition, 10yrs later with followup comments.

First post, so it's hard to say welcome to the forum, but welcome back to the North. We are also looking at starting this spring about 70k outside of the city.

We are meeting with a group of preppers in the area and will let them know about this site. It's great to know we are not the only crazies around these parts 😀

has anyone here grabbed one of the old cargo units for storage? we have also thought about it since we have a chunk of land we are starting from scratch on too. curious about how youd ship it? but i think that would be an awesome idea. not too sure what i would feel comfortable leaving in it if i wasnt there everyday to keep an eye on it.
