I have been reading up on how to use the bags and it seems that not everyone does it the same way. So I wondered how you use them.

For example - pasta - some people leave it in the original bag and seal w/o a o2 absorber, others take it out of the original bag, some take it out of the original bag and use an o2 absorber.

Rice - same as above but also some cook & dehydrate it first.

Plus how do you know how many o2 absorbers you need in a bag?

Good topic! I've never used mylar bags but I'm interested. I read that 2- O2 Absorbers per 5 gallon bucket is used.
I think that the 'best before date' is "as the package is sold" in it's origional wrapping..... I've never had pasta 'go bad'.
I thought that rice sold in bags was already dehydrated.....??

I am not sure if I did mine correct or not but this is how I did my flour and rice.

I took a food grade 5 gallon pail and a Mylar bag, I puy two oxygen obsorbers in the bottom and filled the bag half way, I added two more oxygen obsorbers and then filled it the rest of the way.

I put two more oxygen obsorbers on top then I sealed the mylar bag to about 1/4 of the way closed, then I used my vacum sealer to get rid of the remaining air and finished sealing the bag.

I then closed the pail with a tight lid.

I am not sure if this is the right way or not so I would be interested to hear from a local expert what they think about this method?

Thanks L2L. What strength of o2 obsorbers do you use? I have seen it sold as "different cc" of strength

I was looking more for what strength to buy. Some places have 100cc and use so many per size of bag, others have 1000cc and use so many per bag. I was trying to figure out how many I need to buy and which ones would give me a better return on the dollar.

Hi,

Best tool for sealing Mylar bags is a women’s hair straightener, I used an iron over a piece of wood to seal and worked ok but the straightener has 2 hot sides, you pinch it and run it along the top at a fairly fast pace and it seals up great. I chose to seal up to 2" from the end, enough room to get the long thin vacuum attachment in the hole and suck all the air out. Pinch the end just under the attachment with the straightener, slide it up and viola! A 2" seal.

Best of luck getting your wife, daughter....to let you borrow it 😉

Oh and winter hand warmers are oxygen absorbers. I got a box of 40 pairs for $15 at costco. And they are individually wrapped.
