Indeed it does make sense. I saw no mention of freezing the stuff for a few days to make sure there are no bug eggs before storing. I always do this with any store bought grains after a bout of pantry moths.

that is a good idea ! I'm not sure how concerned I would be about chemicals contaminating the food though, especially if you just drank whatever was in the bottle:) I think I would probably want a wider mouthed bottle for larger foods like beans.

One little tip with using 2 L pop bottles. When filling them make sure they are completely full, tap the bottle so that the grains or what have you, will settle.

Also if you ran out of stuff and the bottle is not full, don't lay it down on the rest and forget about it when stacking more on top. Cause if you are in a hurry you will not pay much attention to that last one done possibly weeks ago.
The bottle will often collapse enough to make a neat dent for critters to start chewing on.

Don't ask how I know. 😉

I don't think laying the bottles down is a good idea, they're designed to hold weight when stood up.
If you have a lot, stand them up, place a board or plywood on top and stack another layer. I hear grocery stores toss the stacker things that get damaged and don't look good in a display.

Here's my 2 cents on acquiring food for long-term food storage for free:

1. Don't shave for 3 days.
2. Shave half your face.
3. Wear something fashionable - from the 1980's.

Once you've done the above steps go from food bank to food bank and you'll blend right in!
