First post!

I've been reading a lot about people stealing stuff to strip the metal and "recycle"/sell it. I'm no thief, but I know that my family (and extended family) drinks an aweful amount of canned pop/juices. I was thinking that instead of throwing the cans in the blue bin, I could crush them and stack them in the garage until I have a couple hundred pounds of it.

Does anyone know what the current value of aluminum is, at a recycler?

Does anybody do this already as a "cash-saver"?

Bea, talk to the local bottle depot first. Ours accepts our crushed empties and we get a lot more than we would get at a metal recycler.

I'm not talking about Beer empties. Those can be recycled (with deposit returned) at THe Beer Store. I'm talking about soda cans (so far, they don't take those).

Thanks

It is my understanding that the prices change. So even if you had the price today, if you didn't take anything in for a month the price could be different. If you have a local place you are thinking about taking stuff to, drop by the place and discuss it with them. Around my place they are big on recycling metals for a second income.

look up Gerdau Ameristeel, they have lots of plants in Ontario.
Not sure where you live, so can not help more than that.
Prices change daily and also sometimes, more in the morning and more in the afternoon.

Answer by OldSchool is spot on.
There are some people I know that do this, and it works out good for them.

Last time I looked it was about 80 cents a pound for aluminum. Search for spot price. Different grades of the stuff have different prices so don't mix your cans with old lawn chairs or other stuff.
You'll need 30 or more cans to make a pound. Aluminum is a commodity, just like any other metal. Price varies but aluminum has been called liquid electricity because it takes so much energy to refine it.
