Hi All,

I am Scott and have already started out all wrong by asking all the wrong questions. Anyway I'm from the Toronto area (Actually Mississauga) and have a cottage approx. 3.5 hours north. I am already learning the right and wrong ways off going about things and would like to thanks those for setting me straight. I have a TON of questions and hope they don't come across the wrong way as I have already done. I started out thinking I needed to prep for basically a post-apocalyptic event. Which is why I started out asking the question I did. Very sorry for that!! I have been looking into taking both CFSC and CRFSC courses. My wife is also interested in these courses but I believe only for recreational shooting an not thinking of protection. I have been getting into watching those prepper shows on TV I know if I mention starting that to my wife she would think I was of my rocker. I live in an Apartment building of which I am the asst. super. so space in my apartment is tight. I do have access to storage rooms all over the building that only the Full time Supr. and I have access to and he doesn't go in some of them at all (or VERY little). Anyway I am going to look into getting the "Emergency food storage and survival handbook by Peggy Layton" as suggested by Entropy to start off and see where it goes from there.

Welcome Sspencer69 and greetings from Northern Ontario. Your first post caused quite the flurry of replies. You can see that we are a dedicated lot that balance our daily lives with our passion for prepping. Use the search function and read through some of the threads. You will find a lot of information and good advice there. Notwithstanding your first attempt don't be shy about asking questions.

lol, we all start out making prepping mistakes.
while i sure can't remember my first mistake, i remember the first "prep" i did make me feel so much better.
i started reading that peggy layton book i mentioned before, and one morning i ran to the recycling box and pulled out some 2L bottles watched them, filled them and treated the water, then i took a sticker i saved from work, dated the bottles. i put them in the small panty we had (on the shelves i built before i was prepping) and told my mom. "if the power is out long enough, we can't guarantee that the water coming thru the pipes have been cleaned properly, we need to have water to drink and brush our teeth with". . . she thought it was a good idea.

i still have those bottles, they are in my freezer. . . if the power goes out they will help keep things cold longer, but 2L of ice also keep my 5 day coolers cold. . .

the date is still on them 12/02

Entropy, I also still have about 100 litres of tap water bottled in 2 litre plastic pop bottles (with 2 drops of bleach) .......since 1999! lol
My first mistake was storing store-bought canned goods in my cold room - it was WAY too moist there for canned goods and they rusted. Ditto for jars I canned myself (metal lid), although not so bad since they were glass. However, it is a great spot for storing root veggies and potatoes.
I now store canned goods in another area......
BTW, welcome sspence69!

i had an insulated shed where i stored some canned goods. they all got some surface rust on them. i took the lables off, wiped down with some cooking oil, and used them. none of the rust made it all the way thru, and none of the food was spoiled. i actually used one of the cans the other day, i've had it for over two years, rust on it for over 18 months, an the food inside was fine. . .

i've had some cans fail, all were tomatoe paste, one tomatoe sauce. i am very careful with food with damaged cans, but so far none of the "outside" issues have caused spoilage. . . i'm cheap, but not that cheap 😉

Hey Spencer,

Welcome from a neighbor next door here in Toronto. I use to live in Mississauga for about 10 years, great place. I wish I still lived there.. every time I go to the gun club which is in Guelph, would save me about 30min each way lol
