Great idea. I usually wait for the "sheppard" peppers are ready and buy them by the bushel from a local farmer. Much easier to do a bit at a time.
Agreed on the farmers markets, also, walk around behind the stands, sometimes they sell less than perfect produce out of sight.
the farmers market here does not offer very good deals at closing time 🙁
If I do too many at one time I get over whelmed and say screw it, so I am trying smaller batches this year. Trying to pace myself... lol
Our local's farmers market is so overpriced its crazy, last year in the height of the fall glut on sqaush, I saw them go for as little as three dollars or as high as ten dollars per sqaush, I even stood and marked down the prices, the only thing I buy at my farmers markets are local organic "new things" that have done well, like last year I got a new little two person sized seeded watermelon, kept all the seeds back and will grow it on my own farm, I have done that with a number of the most costly squash or other foods that you can harvest their seeds with the food, example, really wanted to try a type of potato, bought enough to try them, like them and then the rest went for the storage to be held over for next years growing etc.
I have been able to save alot of money, Fairly warning that you need to do your research for what will cross pollinate, but so far, I have not had a issue to date, but I am prepared for the odd "surprise" to show itself if and when it does etc.
I should not tell this little story but here goes anyway, so I started teaching my DH how to can the first summer we were together, and we have canned together ever since, last year I put up just over 1200 plus jars, and he helped in a lot of the work, but he does alot of the picking, and I do alot of the prepping/canning etc.
So the big 1 dollar sale was on while I was out here (alberta), for the last couple years I buy 50 plus pinnapples and can my own when they go on for a dollar.. I said to dear hubby, try and do at least 30 ok, he got 14, and for the first time did the canning on his own.. o my..got five jars done, two which broke (he forgot the bottom holder on the pot) and the other three didn't seal, (overfilled is my guess) so the rest is being frozen or dried.. It was a eye openning thing for me, this is a guy who has been at my side working with me every inch of the way, while we put up cases of food in a day, but suddenly by himself, even with my books, my personal notes, my equipment, and me on the end of a phone to help.. no go!
It was a good lesson for me, and when he is willing and ready, some time this summer, I will have him do a full batch of something on his own start to finish while I am there to give a helping voice and a watchful eye..

There are several types of markets here. The large in door one which half the time has out of country produce, the large out door one that moved & has local produce. Neither one I have seen deals offered at closing. The costs at both markets are high but not as high as a store. Then there are the farm stalls at the actual farms. Again there are 2 kinds, large stalls with several people working the stall and small stalls no one working you just leave your money in the pail/bucket.
Yesterday my mom and I went to 5 different farm stalls as I wanted rhubarb and realized my plants would not give me enough this year. Here are the prices:
1st large one - no rhubarb, strawberries $5.00 a quart rounded top on the container
2nd large one - rhubarb $3.00 a pound (looked like heck but I still bought 4 pounds all they had), strawberries $5.00 a small quart (not filled to the top of the quart container)
3rd small stall - no rhubarb but had strawberries $4.00 a quart - with a sign saying someone/people had been stealing, please be honest
4th small stall - no rhubarbbut had strawberries $4.00 a quart - with a sign saying someone/people had been stealing, so smile you are now on camera
5th large one - rhubarb $2.00 a pound (not bad looking, bought 4 pounds all they had), strawberries $4.00 a quart with an over full quart - organic farm
pick your own that I did on Thursday $2.00 a quart
Yup! $2 a quart out here for PYO strawberries!
Some of the prices are ridiculous.
METRO HAS SOME SWEET DEALS!
$2.99 a pound for sirloin steaks... I got 3 huge and thick cut steaks on a tray for about $9 (I got 3 trays)
$2.99 a pound for extra lean ground beef... a large tray that was as red as the steaks for about $8. (I got 2)
So 5 trays of meat for about $43 and that is 6 hamburg meals and 5 steak meals... not too shabby!
No frills has some deals on for $1, $2 or $3 again and Food Basics has chicken breasts on for $2.99 a pound.
Be sure to see if the Zellers near you is closing.
They have some good deals on food, meds, first aid kits... when they are up to 70% off.
Currently some are only at 10-20% off, but keep your eyes open for when they increase their discounts.
Zellers.. very bad, never buy electronics from their though, they pack all their stuff on trucks on pallets with large dog food bags on top.. really bad situations for electronics
Now hold on there a minute WildE, my dog likes to watch TV. She doesn't think it has ANYTHING to do with pallets and dog food. She says and I quote "maybe Zellers just sells cheap, shi%^! electronics". Who am I to argue with my dog?

The stores that are closing are also selling the shelving...maybe worth a look if you need shelves to store your preps.
Zellers, be dead and gone here. RIP. 😥 😉
"We 'Prep.' to live after a downfall, Not just to survive."
Our store is liquidating everything.
We are not getting a Target either. 🙁
Prep deal this week? An open box dehydrator, the instruction book was "missing" so it was half price.
I got the thing home and pulled it apart and what do ya know? The manual that was missing was actually rolled up in the layers 🙂
Liquidation World in Paris has some deals on multi tools ($5-10) and small packs of trail mixes (various kinds) great for the car or BOB were $1 a bag.
