http://thelandproject.com/offgrid/ontario-eco-villa/ this looks kind of interesting, may not be for everyone, but it's always an option for those who are really interested!
My wife and I and our children are also looking into forming a community or retreat but our preference is northern ontario (thunder bay area ) as we feel southern and eastern ontario will be a hot spot if shtf. Hopefully next year we will be in a better position to buy some acreage. I looked at some properties this past summer but unfortunately the areas did not allow suitable building allowances. the township would only allow 1 10ft x 10ft building on the property. So we continue to look.
That sounds a little strange. If you own the property you can build what you like on it subject to certain restrictions. One 10 x10 building is the maximum size structure that you can build without applying for a building permit. That is the Ontario building code.
The situation really changed. Years back when I was applying for building permit (100 acr. in Muskoka) first the clerk in build. department ask me if the inspector can drive to the site. The rule was that if the inspector could not drive to the building site you could build anything you want.I still think you could do it.For my business I had to use all kinds of back and side roads deep in the bush and it is hard to believe some of the structures I saw. To some of them you have to walk trough only narrow trail. All deliveries are by four-wheeler only.

I already replied to your other post "jeeon1", but I see you are anxious as we are to get going. So I post here again that we are looking to purchase property in approx 2-3 months, depending on if we have a group and financial input or what. Again, shoot me a PM, we can definitely work something out!
Yes, I'd love to join a co-op green community - help build one - there is a good company in Barrie that specializes in getting property into peoples hands for affordable amounts and payments - both down and monthly. I'm reluctant to use their name as that might violate policy - contact me and I'll give you more info. I'm a herbalist, eat wild food, organic gardener, had hobby farm with chickens, rabbits, goats - eggs, meat, milk..... and cheaper than cows.. Sharbot lake is beautiful area - I am keen on the land above Manitoulin or Manitoulin itself - its about 700 ft above sea level which should be good if the St. Lawrence ever floods LOL. like to hear more about how you are making out with this venture.
Sounds good tribalgem, ill shoot you a PM. Hope to find more like ya and explain what we are trying to achieve with this group.
Is anyone with rural property around Ottawa found success with setting it up according to principles of self-reliance?
I'm located in the city of Ottawa. Is there any interest in networking?
When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fail, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.
-Edmund Burke, 1729 - 1797
yes, I have a small hobby farm that is very heavy towards self-reliance in many ways, What I can't do on my own land, I network on my local road, example, one has a full woodlot right by me for extra firewood, have a barter for maple sap in the spring, just down the road I barter for local raw honey, the hay I get that I can't grow myself comes from within eye shot of my farm etc etc.
Networking in what way?
