If I should have put this in the provincial meet thread, could one of the mods please move it over?

One of the suggestions was to bring goods that you want to trade, barter, sell or just plain give away. I was thinking that a separate thread for people to list what they are looking for or what they have to offer would be better then putting it in the meet board. I have been to several meets over the last year where people have expressed that they would like things like penny stoves or rocket mash heaters but they did not feel that they had the skills to make them on their own. Available time to learn how to make the items was part of the reason as well. I don't know what the rules are for trade, barter, or selling stuff at a meet. It may be something that needs a permit.

Some of the things that I will be bringing:
I will be bringing a very large pot (for Denob's DW)
meat grinders
candle molds
books on natural health/herbals

I would think that being a private sale from one individual to another, there would be no issue, but perhaps someone with more legal knowledge than me could check it out. As for a seperate thread, I think this one will do.
Oh ya, is that pot big enough to fit 2 teenagers in?

I would think it's okay to sell from one person to another - no different than Kijiji or Usedcity.
Some suggestions for trade/give-away (from our E.Ont. meet-up last year) - plants, herbs, etc. - extra cast iron cookwear

Many municipalities maintain bylaws which may be applicable under the conditions that are described here. Trade on the internet is one thing, trade within a municipality is another. These bylaws are developed by municipalites for a number of valid reasons not the least of which is to protect registered taxpaying businesses from unfair competition. For example yard sales in some municipalities are not regulated, whereas in others they are and require the appropriate permit.

To ensure the organizers of the event are not legally responsible for any infraction that may unknowingly be committed it is essential that the hosting municipality be contacted, the relevant information be relayed and any relevant permits be obtained. Should permits not be required written confirmation should be acquired from the municipality and signed by a person having the authority of the municipality to do so. Relevant information might include time, p[lace, duration, type of goods involved numbers attending etc.

Take the time, check it out and get the necessary permits or waiver.

I have just sent out requests to get the details for the following:

Special Events Vendor Organizer Licence - to do a trade/barter/sale table
Lottery licence - to hold a raffle

I'm not sure if simple barter, give-aways, or small sales between friends at our meet-up requires any sort of permission. Personally, I think it's no big deal. I understand why municipalities have 'garage sale permits' - to prevent the weekly perpetual garage sale on one property. From what I understand, this event doesn't have a commercial 'sales' table with goods for sale, does it?
I guess I'm a 'Need to Know' kind of person: "It's on a need-to-know basis, and They (government) don't need to know....." our business...... 'The Man' controlling our event/lives..... again.
Sorry, if I've offended anyone, but I don't mean to. Just stating my opinion.

We have Federal laws, Provincial laws and Muncipal bylaws that we must abide by. This legislation was developed over time to meet a need and to protect all society. We may not agree with certain aspects of different legislation but it does not change the fact that we must abide by the legislation. We should always follow all laws, we can not pick and choose which laws you want to follow. We are in an enviable position comapared to many countries of the world. If we feel strongly we can lobby and work within the process to change the law. That is one thing that makes Canada such a great country.

I thought the same as you until I started to read the by-laws of the Town of Huntsville. No permits/licenses are required if you are doing a sale on your own land. In fact, you can do it all the time if you want. It is when you do it on land that you do not own that requires the permits/licenses. That being said, I am waiting to find out if the permit for the rental will cover the other possible permits required. Based on what I read, some of the additional items like a raffle and trade/barter/sales can be added to the application because it is a "closed event". Meaning, Joe Blow is not going to be walking in off the street.

We are hoping to have a few prepper vendors there as well. They get to set up a small area for a fee or for a discounted sale rate to the people that are going. Several people are still working on details for that based on different topic suggestions.

I posted to not loose what I had typed so far.

One of the suggestions what "Preparing meals from freeze dried ingredients". That could mean a supplier of freeze dried goods does a demo on the product. Even if they did not sell anything but just gave away stuff, it falls under the business license permit rules. Sucks eh
