Watching the news this morning the local station is warning that we are in for a very dry, very hot summer. That got me thinking about a post in here where the person said we are one heat wave away from a major power outage. I am not ready to deal with that yet. Food and water wise I am ok but I don't do well in the heat.
Any suggestions on how to keep my house cooler? I have one critter that gets sick if the temperature goes over 70. I am working on setting up a tank in the basement in case he needs to be moved to a cooler location.
I was told to try using the dollar store Mylar sheets to "hang" as curtains to keep the heat out.
Silly me, I am already really worried about it. 🙂
YOU ARE NOT SILLY! The $$tore mylar sheets are a great idea! Thanks.
I try to hang bamboo blinds and even sheets on the outside of my windows to keep the heat from coming inside in the first place. Keep the heat out = don't open the windows if you know it's going to be hot and humid. Turn on the furnace fan only (heat off, of course) to get the air circulating or just a table fan. Put a dehumidifier in you basement - it will make it more comfortable, not moist/damp feeling, but cool.
However, if the power goes out, we'll all be in our basements or making paper fans to keep cool!
A stormy, hot humid summer is truly a concern.
Thanks
I have been reading up on sewing with mylar. I think the kind you sew with it different. I was going to "sandwich" the Mylar between the fabric and the lining. It also makes a black out curtain from what I have read.
Thanks

that sounds like a brilliant idea!
If your in a house, the best way to keep the heat out of the house, is, to keep it out of the house. Awnings are still the best way to keep the heat away from the windows, and out of the house. Sun light entering the windows and hitting a reflective blind is still heating the air between it, also the highest amount of light is between the window and the reflector since the window has a reflective factor of their own. Best option is having the reflector directly on the inside of the window (high apartment option) by applying it directly to the window, or, putting Mylar on panels and placing as close to the window as possible (touching best).

Thank you Ranger
That's much easier then me trying to figure out how to sew it into the curtains

What dollar store are you finding mylar sheets at?
I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband
They are sold in the camping section as 'Emergency Blankets'...... I used double sided tape (also from the dollarama) - to secure to the inside of some to my windows (shiny side out) . It works like a charm! ( I won't use it on my newer "Low E Glass" windows though....)
Be careful with that, did the same thing in an apartment that I was in, on my bed room (night shift worker). When I was moving out, I had to use a razor and solvent to peel it off the windows.

Did you use "goo be gone" or something stronger 🙂

Yet I have to cover the garden tonight due to a frost warning!
Hummmmph
LOL.....sort of, but not really. Go figure! I put tomato cages around everything so I can just toss a sheet over it quickly if I have to.
I used mineral spirits, goo be gone is almost the same as lighter fluid.
