As far as the mini 14 goes, it's a time tested and proven design and very robust. Plus my combo of stainless steel metal parts and composite stock make it more weatherproof than most.
Anyone see any flaws in all that? I think it's an awesome all around TSHTF rifle...
Looks good to me Redneck. I'd buy one myself, but it's a bit too much $$$ for my budget. I have a hard enough time "justifying" my other "tools" that go bang to my wife.
Just couldn't resist jumping in here.
My "perfect all around survival rifle" is a SKS. While the 7.62x39 round is far from perfect it is a capable defensive and hunting round and the SKS itself is built like a tank. If I run out of ammo its solid enough to use as a club. It even has a folding bayonet that I can use to for defence or even to roast food over a fire with.
I love many guns much much more but since we're talking "all around" this one would serve me best.
Besides, you really can't beat the price on a SKS...at least not for now
trust in yourself
Yup, I have an SKS with a folding bayonet too. LOVE IT. That one will be used in the arms of either myself or one of my group in situations like gotta get out now, partrolling, or as a bush gun for hunting.
It's better to prep for something that may never happen than not prep for something that does.

For Survival in a SHTF Environment, I believe 3 Firearms are required to ensure you can hunt any type of game and keep food of the table:
12 Guage Shot Gun: The most versatile of all firearms in my opinion, light bird shot for hunting wild fowl and slugs for taking deer. 12 guage ammo is pretty plentiful and as long as you make sure your shotgun can handle 3 and a half inch loads then you use any size 12 guage ammo in existance. South of the border this weapon is also considered the weapon of choice for close contact home defense (buck shot rounds).
22LR - Ammo is cheap and plentiful. This weapon is perfect for all small game ensuring you always have food on the table. It is apparently the weapon of choice for poachers due to its "quiet" nature and when used right can be used to hunt larger animals.
.308 - High powered weapon with serious killing power even at 400 yards. You'll drop a moose with this at 400 yards. Can fire the surplus Nato/Military 7.62 round so in a combat/EOTW situation Ammo should be fairly abundant.
I'm not a gun guy, but I grew up in the north hunting. My opinions are strictly my own based on personal experience.

you really need a couple guns 12ga cant be beat but a .22 will always be the king of guns now or later but i do and would also want a bigger cal gun for other reasons and for that a flat shooting .223 would be great
Attached is a photo of "My" Perfect Survival Rifle. Purchased in 1974 I have both the .22LR and .410. The Bronco is light and surpprisingly accurate. Remove 4 split pins and they fit nicley in a Back Pack. When going out hunting rabbit or grouse I usually grab one of these over any other rifle or shotgun in the cabinet.
As for bigger game, you can't beat the Lee Enfield .303 British ( because it is a Historic Weapon you don't have to pin the mag at 5 rounds) or the Winchester 30-30.. both are famous in their own right.

i love guns. love to collect them and shoot them. however, it just dawned on me that we cannot talk about gun selection for SHTF in Canada because it violates the criminal code. a SHTF gun would be used to hunt with and also to defend our lives if need be. To admit this before SHTF occurs is illegal under the Firearms Act because we are admitting that it may be used against another human. Like IRCC says, we cannot discuss things that are illegal in our country. We need to be good Canadians and acquiesce to authorities that tell us they have the monopoly on use of force... 😈

it seems to be a trend with him
If you admit you are buying a gun for self defense, the dealership cannot sell it to you. If you admit on a PAL application or the interview that you intend to buy guns for self defense, the GoC will NOT issue the license. So, if you are prepping and part of the preps is defense, which involves guns, then technically you are breaking the law. The only thing I am doing is making sure there is consistency in application of rules.

What are you talking about?
Attached is a link to the current PAL application form.
Please read through it and indicate where you are asked the purpose of your desire to obtain a weapon.
Let me save you the time...it's not there. They don't ask it.
Here's the link...check for yourself.

I assume most of the people here Hunt with their guns. not many people are going to go out to buy guns just to stick them in a closet and hope someone tries to break into there house. self defense is something every person and family has to think about. even just a day to day basis. (Joe blow at the grocery store tries to steal your wife's/ girl friend's (or in my case my) purse. I want to at least have the skills to defend myself without guns as well (Ex. martial arts). We aren't carrying these weapons around they stay in our homes and are taken out to hunt or to practice shooting. Self defense is important and not against the law. But yes. if you were to go to the gov and say 'Hey! i want my PAL so i can collect guns and shoot people in self defense.' they aren't going to give it to you. But I don't think anyone is that stupid.
Denob, if you do not believe me, go to the NFA or the CSSA and ask the members there... In fact, I would likely be one of the respondents as I'm very involved in the gun lobby and very familiar with the ins and outs of gun laws. The point Denob and nyy-tegan is that it is ILLEGAL to acquire a firearm if said firearm is to be used in self defense (though Harper seems to be chipping away at this..., which is good).
SO, talking about firearms you currently own as using it for SHTF is a de facto admission that it may be used in self defense, which would warrant revocation of firearm license and therefore firearms. Once SHTF occurs, it is all moot, but until then posters should be careful.
Also, please point me to the terms of use agreement so i can study it further...
