Winter Storm
ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA AT 10:58 AM EDT Wednesday 10 April 2013
Summary
Significant freezing rain and ice pellets likely Thursday into Friday. A series of low pressure systems will give periods of rain to many regions into tonight. On Thursday, a stronger low will approach from the southwest and combine with a colder airmass from the north. As a result, rain is expected to change to freezing rain and ice pellets late tonight or Thursday morning. Periods of freezing rain and ice pellets are expected to persist Thursday night into Friday and be heavy at times. Areas from Georgian Bay through Eastern Ontario will see this wintery mix arrive Thursday night, thus the watch has been extended to include these regions. Poor travel conditions are expected over the duration of this event. In particular, the Thursday morning commute may be challenging with icy conditions on untreated roads for areas from the Greater Toronto area westwards to Lake Huron. And it may be even more problematic for the evening rush hour. Of greater concern is the risk of widespread power outages due to downed tree limbs and power lines due to significant ice accumulation combined with northeast winds gusting to 60 km/h. There is a risk that this could be a major ice storm for an appreciable swath of Southern Ontario. Mixed precipitation is expected to persist into Friday (especially for Eastern Ontario) followed by a gradual improvement. There is still some uncertainty as to the track of the storm and the extent of the cold air Thursday. This will have an impact on whether the regions in the winter storm watch receive predominantly ice pellets or freezing rain. Environment Canada will monitor this situation closely and will issue warnings as needed as the evolution of the storm becomes more certain.

Any one know how much of the province is expected to be effected

From what I can learn is that if you were to draw a line east and west just south of Peterborough: south would get freezing rain, and north would get snow.
This is a mixed up storm and a slight change could make all the difference.
We still have the snow tires on and the genni has been exercised and preps are up to date.
I generally sleep pretty well during these storms although they have the potential to be a pain in the a$$.
The mess will melt in a day or so.

My region got added to the list at 11:32 this morning.
Basically from the map on ICRCC's link, the whole eastern part of the country is going to get a big load of cruddy weather!
Keep warm and safe everyone...
and double check your preps now just to make sure everything is working!
I got plenty of Rum, food, gas (from the pickled eggs) and fuel for my generator. Yup I'm set.

What's a little snow? Were're Canadians! 😀
Glad you have your priorities in the right order Ranger. 😀

Darnit!
My rum evaporated again!
Oh well, guess I may have to break out some of that fancy stuff instead!
Looks like where I am (south of London) is only forecast for more heavy rain...
Hey Ontarians.
Please report in if you can, let us know how you are doing.
They are reporting over 100,000 without power in southern Ont as of this am.
Hope all is safe and keeping warm.
A sense of humor is absolutely essential to survival.
hi Folks,
checking in, I am good, we had a few limbs down, and otherwise got off with just a regular storm here on the farm..
http://livingmydreamlifeonthefarm.wordpress.com/
Checking prior to the storm we started with our preps, as well as gas, oil, etc for our generator. No heavy-duty extension cords. #$@%%!!! They ended up at the cottage hanging next to the other generator. Canadian tire had them on sale. lesson learned.
Checking in after the storm and we faired pretty well. No real damage and the extension cords were not needed. We did have extensive ice damage to a couple of large trees near the house. They will be coming down and end up in the firewood pile. Serves them right. Falling branches and ice make a lot of noise on a metal roof and you tend to keep waking up!! LOL
Now we are waiting for spring..
