Well, with an exciting opportunity comes a chance to grow as a prepper as well. I've been offered a job in Northern Ontario north-east of Lake Nipigon at a fishing camp. It's fly-in like many places up north, and a little remote. What can some of my northern neighbours teach me about prepping up North? The lake we're on is lightly fished, so there's abundant fishing for survival. There's plenty of wildlife, including moose and caribou, seen regularily there (so I'm told).
Wow, what an opportunity! Congratulations! Don't forget the bug repellent lol!
The north is great, back in my twenties I worked for both bird hunting outfitters (running the butcher camp end of the program, as well as pickups and drop off etc) I was both working and had upwards of three to four folks working full time for me depending on how busy it got in the camp.. very very different from when I worked with a big game hunter in ride in only hunting camps in the rockies..
Very very different from working pipeline camps as a camp cook and all three of those are very different from DH's skill set as a northern artic geologist in far northern camps..
My advice, go learn, listen, enjoy, explore and have the time of your life, be prepared for long hours, hard work and the ability to daily work skills that most folks will only do for a day here or a weekend here, and it will work to help create muscle memory, but keep in mind that what you learn at the camp does not mean that much of it will be applicable at other places you live or work in..
Example, I was raised in bush country in alberta and moving north to NWT was like coming home to me.. the skills flipped nicely but Nunavut.. o baby, it was a new world..
ah, to be young and footloose again..

Get your fishing licence and FLY DOPE!
Congrats!
One thing I ask myself at times when I follow topics is "how was it done before?" In this case, I see lots of calls for bug repellent (and I agree!) but I can't help but wonder how natives used to do it, or early pioneers - back in the day before there even was bug repellent?!
