Hey There! Brand new to this forum. I am located in South Western Ontario, married with two kids. I have successfully prepped lots of food, fuel, power provisions, tools, reference guides, and enough ammo and firearms to make an American jealous. I have significant water storage, water purification tablets and lots of propane to boil water if needed. The one thing I have left until now, which I know I should not of, is purchasing a good water filter. I have a big pool and hot tub, there is a stream near my house, and I have a cottage on a large lake, so lots of resources to get generally good water but would need to filter it. Would love to hear from anyone that could suggest a good filter, keeping in mind it would have to handle the needs of 4 people.

This is a great blog and thats the link to the water purifier review. Welcome 🙂
Or for a larger group this style may suit:

Thanks Sensretractor! Any thoughts on http://www.survivalequipment.net/katadyn_camp.html ? Like the idea of building my own as per the squidoo link as well, could be a fun project, might do both... like the idea of having a backup on my backups anyway.
I like the msr water filters. We carry the mini works in our bobs

Mini works is best but for a BOB (weight and size) the Sawyer seems to suit. I think the original poster was looking for a filter for a large group, any thoughts?
Really all depends on your budget, and how mobile you want it to be. Is it to stay at your house or cottage or is it for your BOB? I sell Katadyn and can order any products in from them(even if i dont list them on my site). I'm a huge fan of the Katadyn pocket, Comes with a 20 year warranty, .2 micron Cleanable filter, 1L per min List goes on.

Only thing with the Katadyn Camp is it filters 5L per hour so you have to set it up and leave it would be great for a camp but it is less effective if you need to be on the move.

I have had a Berky water purification system for a couple of years now and aside from it being able to not only filter but actually purify most water it has saved me hundreds of dollars as I no longer have to buy, haul and set up those 5 gal containers. My wife and I immediately noticed a difference in the water taste the first sip we took and we would never want to be without it.
The Berky black filter systems come in many different sizes all the way from a single person water bottle all the way up to ones that can supply a small hospital with its daily water needs.
I strongly recommend you check out Berky and if I am not mistake there is a poster here who has a store in Orillia, Ontario and on the Internet called Conscious Water. I only suggest this store because he is from Ontario and is Canadian and other than that I know very little about it.
I hope that this helps.

Hey Ian,
Would not be used on the move, cottage is my bug out location, about 30 mins away. Great point about the flow rate... need to consider that for sure.

Thanks for the point in the right direction Captain - these Berky's are rated really well - great suggestions.
i like http://www.lifesaversystems.com/lifesaver-products/lifesaver-bottle
they have jerry cans and portable bottles that filter everything , bacteria , chemical, virus...the demo i saw they poured sewage into it...the thick stuff and it produced drinkable safe water

I too have had a berkey water system and I also picked up the PF2 filters (I think they are called) that get rid of a bunch of stuff such as fluoride. We use it daily and very happy with it but I do have a question that people here might know.
If I was to clean out those 5 gal tanks, then ran my water through the berkey and deposit that water in my 5 gal tanks. Then store these tanks in a cool place with very little light. Would it be safe to assume that this method of storage would be good to drink in the event we had no water?
Lifesaver system is very good but seems more like a BOB or short term option. For longer term there is the Aquapail which looks like a very good option for large families or even more depending on the size.
Redlite, we have 13 seven gallon tanks that we rotate with our Berkey water. 1 tank per 5 days roughly. Been doing it over a year.
