I have no articles to base this on nor any learned dispositions. What I will say is that the "government" can ultimately do anything they want with anything. If the legislation doesn't currently exist they can create it. Those who see salvation ot protection in any tangible good or articles are fooling themselves. Any bank, credit union or anything else can be tapped. I disagree with those who say to place wealth into gold or silver. All the government has to do is make it illegal to posess those metals in any quantities beyond personal jewelery. Regardless of the ultimate system, there has to be some form of "money", be it paper, metal or electronic. The government needs something to control and track. To answer De L'eau's question... in the end nothing is safe. They can take your assets, your money, your pension regardless of the form it is in. They can control your wealth through wage and price controls, inflation, outlawing certain types of wealth IE precious metals, stones... etc. YOU OWN NOTHING!!!! What you have you keep at the largesse of government. You may have paid off your mortgage but if you can't pay the taxes the government will take it away from you. Same with your car or your job. You may retain physical ownership of your car.. but the government can legislate it off the road. Same with most jobs. They can legislate away any professional certification or trades certificates. You only need to go back to WW2 to see what the government can and will do if it meets their needs.
JAB
Hey all,
Everything that JAB wrote on this thread can be verified for having happened historically in one place or another. Does it mean we should give up on banks and credit unions? Does it mean we should forgo worldly possessions because they could be taken from us? This is exactly the fear mongering that we as a prepper sub-culture gravitate towards instead of sober reason.
I am not advocating blind faith in our government and in our institutions. I think that all forms of authority should be questioned again and again until we are satisfied with the answers we receive. That we take responsibility for our futures, even if the S doesn't hit the fan and the world doesn't end. Perhaps especially so. So if you are concerned that our government will take all you possessions away, study that issue. Find out the circumstances that led past governments to the decisions that you fear our own government may take. I personally think that our leaders don't want the music to stop any more than we do.
So why did the music stop in Cyprus? Several reasons really. It started with joining the European Union and giving up sovereign control over its own currency and monetary policy. Followed by poor economic policy and lax banking regulation. I'm sure that many of you know that Cyprus is a tax haven for wealthy world citizens to park their money off shore in order to avoid taxes at home. You might ask yourselves why the wealthy countries in the EU came down so hard on poor little Cyprus? Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that they were aiding tax dodgers from these self same wealthy EU countries? That the fact that Cyprus was looking for a bail out from the tax payers of the EU who paid their taxes and would therefore guarantee the deposits of the tax evaders? As it stands, the Cyprian government is going to tax the hell out of accounts with balances over 100 000 Euros or so (I don't know the exact number and don't have a personal account with that much money here, so it's not an issue for me). The bigger problem is that we get our news in two hundred character pieces that do little or nothing to provide context to the stories that are freaking everyone out. And then 'we' have the audacity to call others "sheeple".
I can't believe that I'm the one defending the Canadian government here... As I wrote in my last post on this thread, I really don't believe that there is any conspiracy by our leaders to claw back on our civil liberties. It's really a matter of laziness that is to blame. The original models of Democracy were never intended for communities larger than a few thousand people. To make it work now, power and right has to be consolidated into the hands of a smaller few. It is easier to do the tough job without so many people standing in the way of getting things done. Look at the dead lock that the Americans have been enjoying in their Congress for the last few years. Here at home at least, we get the opportunity to vote the scroundrals out if we are unhappy with the actions of the smaller few. The system is flawed and prone to corruption. If you are honestly concerned about it though, there are MANY avenues for you to get involved so that you can make your concerns known and so that you can better understand what the devil these folks are up to. I've got a brand new crisp fiver that says most of you won't.
Finally, the Canadian Nation will ultimately come to an end. The same is true of every nation and alliance that we know today. We are all going to die one day; and there is no such thing as Santa or the Tooth Fairy (It's really just your parents). More importantly though, Canada will not fail today. Nor will it fail tomorrow. We can check the health of our country in much the same way that we can check our own health. We know when it is sick, and nine times out of ten we know when it is terminal. Canada is not that. As a nation we have a decent balance sheet. Our banks are healthy; their behaviors closely regulated, and we are not beholden to other countries over our monetary policy. I'm now in my 40's and am pretty certain that our country can keep it together for the remainder of my short time here. If I'm wrong, I will have several preps in place to ride the storm and to see what rises from the ashes. Meanwhile, I will continue to watch our leaders closely and to question again and again until I'm satisfied with the answers.

The grade twelve explanation...
Being in your 40's and providing a somewhat intelligent response to the above questions, I'll assume that you also know that your CPP will amount to near zero if not zero income when you retire.
The difference between a bank and a credit union is simply that a credit union is owned by depositors/members rather than (stock market) share holders, more often than not banks (and executives of banks) themselves as opposed to common depositors. The credit union executive have far more people to answer to that banks who answer to very few shareholders and the government. The credit union share executive more often than not live near or among the share holders farms/neighborhoods. ( A bit harder to duck the heat when all hell breaks loose.)
While it is true (and I have posted this before) if it isn't in your hand, you do not truly hold your wealth. An old wise man told me, "In today's economy keep enough cash on hand for 6 months of living and spend the rest." I'll say that he was correct concerning inflation BUT the whole Cyprus thing brings it to new levels. I have accounts in both a bank (for day to day convenient living) and a credit union (for preserved fiat currency (not money) I hope). I would also hope that in the event of a bank collapse I would have a day or two to pull my funds from a credit union. (this may be wishful thinking on my part)
A safety deposit box is only as safe as GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION in a time of economic collapse allows it to be. Just ask a Cypriot about that...
Will the Canadian government fail? I truly hope not but at the same time do NOT truly trust my government. Even the proposed "Bill C-30" ought to tell you how much trust to have. If you look at later omnibus bills you can see components of bill C-30 trying to and successfully being passed.
So who do you trust? Remember, "It's us or the terrorists!" ... Er I mean ... "It's us or the pedophiles!" .... Er I mean ... "It's us or the next group we demonize!" to pass the next bill.
Please, read an awful lot and think for yourself. Let your conscience be the judge, not your trained seal MP.
Peace out,
BTR

BTR,
It would be pretty poor "prepping" on my part were I counting on CPP for retirement income. 😉 There is 'preparing for SHTF' and there is willfully putting oneself in the path of it. I personally believe that retirement planning is one of the most important preps that I do. It goes back to not having to depend on the charity of friends, family, or the government should I find myself in an awful situation. Of course I'm not saying that getting older is awful. Just getting older and being dependent. Of course that may mean saving more than six months worth of living expenses (unless I'm planning a very short retirement). I think of my retirement planning as the preps that I hope that I use, versus some others that I hope I never have to.
Like you, I have accounts at both a chartered bank and at a credit union. I can't claim that it was astute planning on my part. I just found that I got better personal service at one over the other, but enjoy the financial power of the other. However I have an ownership stake in both institutions. In fact, I own shares in half of Canada's big banks even though I don't own accounts in all of them. Still, it's probably good not to have all of one's eggs in a single basket.
I completely agree with your assertion, "read an awful lot and think for yourself."
Cheers,
