It should not cause another heated discussion. You are right Landfinder, you should have a plan and the means “encourage” people to leave the group if they cannot be productive members. My guess is that would need some encouragement. Those that do not think they will have to deal with that particular situation if TSHTF have their head stuck where the sun does not shine. 😉
To clarify, when I mentioned the Fringe in an earlier post I was definitely not referring to Thrive.
Thanks ICRCC, and everyone else, lets walk together like brothers and sisters and work together for a safe future with great respect for mother earth.
What has been proposed here is a great opportunity that most of us on this site have been searching for. Maybe even what brought many of you here in the first place. Once again the sceptics and helpful have both chimed in, which is exactly what is needed. Other times before people have joined this forum and offered a similar opportunity, but have not been active lately. This may be because they found what they were looking for or found the responses to be non-fulfilling.
Now landfinder has put forth some specific details. I hope landfinder sticks to the guns and finds great preppers to work and share with.
There are a lot of great people who contribute to this site and have great advice and questions like what has come up in this thread.
Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...
Thrive vs. owning land and preparing.
For the record, I don't have any problem with rational folks working together towards a shared vision. My previous comments are directed at the Thrive piece and the many theories proposed there. I guess I just "spit the hook" but, like my thiest friends, believe what you like - it costs me nothing.
Antsy
Needs must when the devil drives.
They are two different subjects for sure. In many ways this should be two threads and I believe that we would benefit by splitting them because they are two different subjects.
Martha and Syn, i like your viewpoints and really respect them. There has to be a spectrum in opinions or there can never be natural democracy. I honestly feel that people like yourselves would be the very reason communal WOULD work. (Turning the tables on you, :p) The reason I say that is because of your skepticism. The hippies for one were very ill prepared and had various "dependencies" within their commune. Your belief structure obviously has a very well set guideline to survival and that type of viewpoint would balance the democracy of a group. Basically... if those hippies had a few people like yourself I would bet money it WOULD have worked. You mentioned your age. You think that way because you evolved as a human to think that way. It is completely natural for you to feel the opinion you currently have. Why, because youngsters like my wife and I who are probably more run'n gun ignorant in certain life experiences/situations can learn from you and continue civilization (The old saying that I dont completely agree with but understand what they are trying to say: "If you're young and a republican you have no heart. If you're old and a democrat you have no brain"). Your type of opinion is a life insurance for the younger generations in regards to teaching and learning in a commune. There were waring nations of the natives but there were incredibly peaceful nations that even put the greek's democracy to shame. They basically met aliens and decided to feed them... cant say the same about modern day humanity. One reason those nations did work is because of the learning system. The elders valued the young and the young valued the elders. Without the exchange of knowledge/experience and the balance of the natural democracy it can never work. (did you know that Cherokee gave women's rights and democracy before the greeks. The second highest position was a woman who handled all trade, negotiations and decisions on prisoners. A very forgiving and generous culture that flourished until aliens exterminated them.. 🙁
Tucker Blue and M590a1 , please go back and read what I actually wrote for comprehension please because I never voiced any opinion whatsoever on anyones community ideas in this thread and yet I am brought up twice as being skeptical and not contributing an alternative idea . I am being dragged into this by your posts which seem erroneous to me .
I don't have anything further to add to what's been said, of course each person is free to think what they like.
Keep a diary, it will make an interesting book one day... if they ever get the printing presses started again! :>
Hi there everyone, I appreciate your comments and thoughts. I especially appreciate Tucker Blues thoughtful insights into the Native culture and he is bang on. As for the discussion being split, that is fine with me however, I have nothing more to say about Thrive except to reiterate, it is one of the REASONS I have decided to move towards a communal focus and away from being completely independent (just wife and I). You may all make your own choice, however, I do think the reasons any of us chose to "Bug out" is relevant in all these discussions and should not and can not be isolated into a separate thread. All the best to you and keep on preppin.
I think is about time to split this discussion leaving this one for the discussion of the original post; examining the possibility of creating a group with the location already secured.
Thrive is an interesting movie. It covers so much we just can’t do justice to it here. So I have started a thread called Thrive in the Fringe Forum. Now just let me state that there is much in thrive that belongs in the main forums but we will start there. If we need further splitting of the topic we can discuss that too.
So those interested in the original post please post your comments here. Let’s try to keep it positive and leave the doom and gloom comment for another thread. Those interested in Thrive locate the thread in the fringe forum.
I recall a commune set up on the east shore of Lac La Barge in Yukon,Canada in the 1960's in protest to the vietnam war and had a large group of draft dodgers making up its' population.I spent time in the Yukon in the early 80's and heard it was doing well.As far as today-I have no idea.As for landfinder, you have a definite edge just because of the climate and soil type. What are your plans as far as land use for grain, gardening and grazing? Do you have arable land to share or to sell? How big is the lake? Maps give the impression of good hunting and fishing in your area. Will you scrap the sask. sales tax in your constitution? What is the availability of coniferous trees for cabin building? I hope licenses are similar to Albertas' for tree cutting.Great berry and mushroom country along with wild herbs and medicines.Good choice for land.Your group will do well and thrive. You will be surrounded by self supporting farming communities who live the life now.I can't see you having any problems with bandits.Location,location,location.You have thought this out and made an excellent choice. The people you choose to join you will have a headstart thanks to your wise choice. If there is anyone out there thinking of following in landfinders' steps, you would do well to follow his reasoning.
