I noticed that in the Morman storage amounts they include vitamin c tablets. A smart idea since we don't grow citrus fruit up here. I have been watching too much tv lately and many seem to think we have a chance of one of many active volcanos in the wold spouting their tops and ashes into the air. It makes me think that vitamin D would be good to have on hand and at the first warning we should really pile up on them. Store milk has added vitamin D, but I'm not sure about powdered. I have health issues that mess up my D level and I can tell you that your body does notice it missing.

I dehydrate citrus fruit as well. Some people make tea from spruce tips for good Vit C. For Vit D you can store lots of dried shitake mushrooms. Not if this works with your health concern, but for more Vit D wouldn't it just be easier to spend more time outside in midday to up it?

Just a heads up..Vitamin C is notoriously hard to store long term. It almost immediately starts to break down and foods fortified with with Vit. C and also D will start to lose their "potency." I dont think you typically see foods or vitamins that can guarantee it will last longer than a year or two? (I stand to be corrected on that fact, but it will not last long term.)

HopeImReady is right about the Pine Needles. First Nations historically used to brew something like tea and get the Vitamin C from this source. Very easy to do....and warning it is an "acquired" taste.. 🙂 Same with Birch Bark as a source of Vitamin C and you can brew an awful tasting "tea" with it. Vitamin D you get from the Sun. Its in the winter months where you may not get sufficient Vitamin D that supplements help. Really 15-20 minutes a day in the sun during summer months is all you need unless you have some health specific issues in which case a medical doctor can help you out. Vitamin D is found in a lot of foods...some mushrooms, some fish...

Easy source of Vitamin C for our location (most of western Canada) is rose hips. 17 grams - that's a few fruits - give you your daily dose. Dry it for later, and you lose about half the VitaC content.

Professors right!! Rose hips contain loads more vitamin c than a orange!!!!! Citrus fruit contains 50mg of vitamin C per 100g -rose hips have 1250mg. But open them up first and pull out the fuzzy seeds before you eat them. Some folk call what the seeds produced as "itchy butt". Doesn't sound good!! 😕
There are many plants/trees that contain all the vitamins you would need. There are also many books out there that help you identify them and how to prepare the various plants. Knowing this type of info takes some time-if your interested in natural medicines-I suggest you start reading now.

I do have books and am looking at them. I think what you didn't understand from my first post is that I'm pointing out that we should all have a store of vitamin D or know a D source in case the sun is blotted out for a few months or years by volcanic ash. I was in southern AB when mount St. Helen blew and we didn't see the sun for about 3 days. There are historic presidents of times when there was "no summer". People who study such things are concerned that depending on the location of the eruption and the direction of the wind we could be in a situation where we couldn't count on the sun. I try to prep for as many problems as possible and I think this is a potential one. Of course a lot of other probs besides Vit D will come into play if there is a major eruption.

That's a great idea, but they have changed opinions of how much D we need and I know it's tough to have it low-lousy symptoms. They are saying 2000 ius for adults.
