Pellet guns are different from BB guns. Pellet guns have rifles barrels and can be very accurate. BB on the other hand is a smooth bore and not so accurate. A pellet gun would also be best for target practicing as Ranger said and very cheap for ammunition. Also good for small game hunting such as small birds, rabbits and squirrels with head shots. Quiet and unobtrusive.

😆 I still have my Crossman Backpackers both .22 and .177 that I brought up to PAL specs in the fall. Their a hoot and I love moding Crossmans. I think my .22 is at around 650fps and my .177 is about 580 fps. Enough for small birds and a squirrel on the spit and flame! Put a squirrel on the barbie anyone?

For those who doesn't have R/PAL, have you guys consider muzzle loader?
As long as it's a long gun muzzle loader, I don't think you need a R/PAL; I don't remember if this was discussed here or another site.
You will need restricted PAL for pistol muzzle loader.

You may wish to not type so fast LBJ, I think you hit the wrong numbers as if you have pellet guns over 500 ft persecond the last I heard that would make them a restricted, registered firearm. I may be wrong as who can keep up on the details of the ever changing laws, but I did think 500 fps was the max allowed for pellet pistols, I am sure someone on here knows if its still so.
I do agree 22 and 177 are great for fun, and the 22 pellet will take small game no problem with good shot placement.

(if the laws have changed regarding the 500 fps please post a link to where the new requirement is.)

Analog Man,

You are correct, but there maybe revision (to be announced).

Here's a link that you can reference: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/faq/index-eng.htm#a4 (any airguns that discharge more than 152.4m/s or 500ft/s considered to be a firearm for purposes of the Firearms Act and for offences related to the Firearms Act in the Criminal Code).

the airgun link is blanked with the following notice: "Important Notice The Canadian Firearms Program fact sheets concerning the Firearms Act are currently being revised. Updated versions will be posted as soon as possible."

hope that helps.

No Guys you can relax. Anything 500 fps and over you need a PAL. I do have a PAL so its OK. I just purchased them as Non PAL firearms. Modding is allowed but you have to stay within the peramiters of the law. Its not uncommon to buy a 490 to 499 and have certain weighted pellets or atmospheric conditions that will bring your weapon over the limit. Again that is all hypothesis and open for discussion.

Sorry, second to my last...I should mention that alot of municipalities are now starting to ban the use of pellet and bb guns no matter what rating they are. You need to check with you local authorities and make sure you are not popping Alvins in your back yard when its Bylaw posted that you cannot. This has become the case with alot of things in the Lower Mainland as you might recall Crossbows are now PAL. Its a case where laws are manipulated to fit the needs of Certain lobbyists instead of the rights of honest Canadians. I hate to say it but this is what happens when you have too many speacial interst groups feeding off the fears of the Police Authorities. FEAR IS OUR WORST ENEMY.

I am relaxed, just be sad if you posted something that could come back to haunt you legaly in the future, but if your sure your legal then alls well.
After reading that link I think my dog running to fast through a culvert ( energy greater than 5.7 joules), or with a leash operated by one hand could be considered a firearm, but I am sure the laws are for our own good, least we hurt ourselves with something pointy.

True enough! I think pellets and bbs are the least of their worries right now with all the weaponry coming from South of the border. Its sad but thats why we prep and thats why we have this site that allows us to share and learn. Im getting sick of all the rules and regs too but with allot of the problems we are seeing, we are slowly creeping into the American problem. Guns out of control and unaccountable. No disrespect to any Americans that may be on sight. Im refering to the excess amount of heavy Artillery on the streets of America and now Canada.

be prepared also that the rcmp will call all your references and will call you and reverify your application over the phone.
this is the normal procedure for restricted application.
