Canning Recipe for Better Than Heinz Ketchup
3.5 quarts or 1 102 oz Can tomato sauce
3 cups dark honey
2 cups apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 c salt
1/2 c Mrs. Dash Onion & Herb or 1/4 c garlic powder+ 1/4 c onion powder
Bring to a boil and simmer for 40 min. Pour into hot canning jars and water bath process for 20 min. Should yield 7 pints.

This is a very quick and easy bread recipe that you cook in a dutch oven. Whip it up the night before and let sit over night. Recipe has numerous variations.

Just a thought, but whatever food you store should be what you actually eat on a regular basis. So if one of these recipes strikes a chord, actually make it and eat it. THEN decide if it belongs in your preps. Storing a bunch of things your family doesn't normally eat won't work out well for anyone in case of a real disaster. 🙂

From the Gooseberry Patch:
Salsa for a Year
15 lbs. roma tomatoes, cored, peeled
and chopped
2-1/4 lbs. jalapeños, chopped
3 lbs. onions, chopped
2 c. cider vinegar
3 T. plus 1 t. canning salt
25 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
1/2 c. sweet paprika
15 1-pint canning jars and lids, sterilized
Combine all ingredients in a 5-gallon stockpot. Stir well. Heat to a boil, stirring often; reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Spoon salsa into hot sterilized jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Wipe rims; secure lids and rings. Process in a boiling water bath for 15 minutes. Set jars on a towel to cool for 24 hours; check for seals. Makes 15 jars.
Mamaizzy, Re: Salsa - Don't forget to wear 'latex'/plastic gloves when you chop up those jalapenos or your hands (and any body part you touch with those hands) will be burning for a day(s)!! And do you think they mean, course (pickling) salt when they say "canning salt"?
On the gloves, I agree! But I cheat and use the food processor lol
I use coarse salt. Haven't killed or poisoned anyone yet! 😉

I just calculated what it cost for my Rice and Peas dinner last night...$2.80 cents...for enough to feed 4 teenagers or 6 normal adults as a main dish. And people laugh at me for being such a frugal shopper...now the rice I just bought was 8kg for $4.97...that's the cheapest I've seen rice in 20 yrs...my other sale rice was 8kg for $6.99 so even at that price we're talking under $4.00 to feed a family...you just have to add a side of green beans and maybe a carrot salad and you're still under $7.00 if you have bought everything at sale prices.
2 cups of rice = 18.6 cents
red kidney beans= 99 cents I think, bought them awhile ago, husband thinks 79 cents though (Great Value brand, EXCELLENT quality beans)
coconut milk, 1 can =88 cents
1 large onion = 25 cents
3 green onions = 20 cents
fresh thyme - 15 cents
garlic = 15 cents
hot pepper = free from my garden
cooking oil = 20 cents
