Picked about 150 pounds of tomatoes we need to can. Put a couple hundred pounds of spuds down for the winter that had dried for a couple days. Bought some new canning jars as we were running short. Where we live it is not worth going to garage sales for items like that........... burn way more money in fuel going to them than just buying them new when we make a trip for supplies.

or you could do what some people are doing and just help your self to 5000lbs potatoes right out of the field. the farmers said it has always happened in the past in small quantities but they have never seen it on this scale before, and said other farms are now reporting similar thefts. And right now everything is fine and look what is happening, just think what will happen when SHTF, you can never be too prepared.

Ya, humans at their finest. Your right, when the SHTF it will get a whole lot worse. It always amazes me as well, just how lazy people are.
They can be low income and they will piss and moan about how broke they are and that times are tough, but will they cultivate a bit of ground in and grow some potatoes and other root crops. Heck no. much easier to bitch and complain or help yourself to the fruits of someone else's labours.
Thank goodness I don't live where I have to worry about people doing this sort of things as I would not be as gracious about it as some of the big commercial farming operations who usually just ignore it. Times are changing tough......... and not for the better.

Welcome Mooswa and greetings from Northern Ontario.
Thanks ICRCC. Nice to see a Canadian site.

👿 I AM "LOW INCOME" and I DO NOT piss and moan about how broke I am - I have always been a Prepper, likely because I have known what it's like to be without. I have always had a garden and even given away veggies to neighbours who earn TEN times what I do, expecting nothing in return! Don't be so presumptuous and 'holier than thou' about people on low incomes. The low income earners are no more or less thieves than other income groups.......(think Enron).
And DON'T, don't call me lazy!!! I grow food, chop my own firewood so I can afford to heat my house, add to my storage thoughtfully of every penny I spend. ❗
Whew! Okay I got that off my chest - I feel better now. 🙄

Presumptions and assumptions ..... good or bad.... are the worst things we can do. It is easy to judge... but in the end it is the person you are, what you know and your wilingness to learn and work that matter. I would rather have 10 "poor" people with strong backs and a willingness to work and pitch in than 100 rich lazy arrogant jerks. We all come into this world naked and with nothing. We will all go out the same way.

You took what I said completely the wrong way. There are lazy people at all income levels. I was not singling out low income people.......... hell I am low income. I can tell you though that I know lots of low income people, family included, who will not get off their asses and grow a garden. Most people do not grow gardens, rich, middle class or the maligned low income............ and while you would think low income people would avail themselves of this great way to obtain healthy food and peace of mind, most do not, unless they were brought up with it and it is sort of a part of their way of life.
Why do people always insist on taking things personally. Does not matter what you say these days, someone has to take offence to it. Lighten up. Having said that I will also say that I know lots of low income people who do piss and moan about doing without and who do nothing to help themselves that involves manual labour. No matter how broke they profess to be they always have enough money for booze, satellite tv and a cell phone. Take offence to it if you want but that is my life experience to date, for every low income type like you (or me) who cuts their own wood etc. I know a half dozen that just snivel about the cost of their utilities.

So very true. Again it is attitude and aptitude....NOT what you may have or don't have. Sadly there is a culture of entitlement in not just this country but in most of the Western World. Gone are the days of expecting to work for what you need and have. Too many believeit is their "right" to enjoy an adequate lifestyle. They forget that with rights comes responsibility. That is the failure.
Today I canned 9 quarts tomato sauce, 8 pints mixed veggies, and 4 pints green/yellow beans.
Well I think I to will get back on track with "What Did You Prep This Week" but first. There are rich people and there are poor people. There are people on social assistance who through no fault of their own have no alternative. Then there are those scum sucking, low life leaches that expect everything from society and give absolutely nothing in return. Many have not worked much more than a day in their life. They tried it and decided they didn't like it. But hey we can't blame them. We house them, we feed them and we pay their utilities and we encourage them to have children. Not a bad job if you can get it! It's a choice and it is a choice I am sure NONE of us here would make.
Ok back to prepping just picked up another 20K sack of sugar, one dozed cans of beef stew , one dozed cans of cheap spam and half a dozen boxes of trail bars.

Maybe the potato comments can be moved to another thread. I think it is an interesting topic on human nature.
Where do you get your sugar from? I am tired of just being able to get 2 kg bags and paying $2.49 for them?
In the last 48 hours I have:
canned 12 quarts of tomatoes
canned 17 jars of apricot jam
dehydrated a 1/2 bushel of green peppers
just about finished making "salsa spice"
ready to can cinnamon apple butter
got the juice ready for apple jelly
bought a 1/2 each of pears and peaches
starting to can "fireballs"
Yes 2 kg bags are sure not cost efficient. It surprises me as the stores we drive to all carry 10 kg bags of sugar over and above the smaller offerings, even in small the small farm towns. Once a year we drive to the big city and go to Costco, they have many things in bulk sizes although the prices are not always a great deal and still have to check the price per unit.

I got the20Kg sack of sugar from Independent. They have white, brown and icing sugar in that size. Depending on the type it can work out to about a 20% saving. If I had the choice I would prefer 10Kg bags but we can't get them up here.
