Hey all. Just throwing my thoughts out here, stuff that has been playing on my mind recently. The situation in the U.S. is a concern, there's no doubt. Most likely they'll pull it together in the 11th hour, but there is a real deadlock there. I read this morning that there are some Republicans that aren't even worried about not raising the debt ceiling in time, that they won't default. Yet how the market responds could be a serious issue.

Now, I think it likely that if/when the SHTF, it will very likely be a culmination of more than one event/situation. I have also been eyeing the MERS situation, checking up on it regularly. With the Haj pilgrimage happening next week, there will be millions gathering in the heart of the area with the highest number of MERS incidents. Officials are concerned about those pilgrims taking the disease back to their home countries, potentially creating a pandemic. Again, the chances of this are relatively low, but the source of the disease and the mode of transmission are still unknown. Scientists are baffled, cold and flu season is coming, and we have millions traveling to and from the Middle East.

If these two things came to a head, they would do so at around the same time. Although the chances are small, the results if they did would be potentially catastrophic. There is a line from World War Z that I really like, "People don't think something can happen until it happens." Truer words were never spoken. I have been feeling these past couple of weeks that I need to hurry, that I need to get far better prepared and don't have a lot of time to do so. Anyone else feeling this way? Thoughts on this are welcome.

Don't psych yourself out man. Good to be prepared and continue to do so.

If its keeping you up at night, just take a deep breath and read through all the prepper forums on the WWW where thousands of predictions that a mass trajedy or SHTF scenario would happen and nothing ever came to fruition. It wasn't to long ago that Syria was supposed to spiral into WW III....when the US gov't debt ceiling has been resolved, onto the next news headline for EOTWAWKI scenario... I'm not saying to disregard being prepared or that nothing can ever happen. But just that it's a heck of a way to live getting worried over the latest headlines and extrapolating a huge disaster over it...when yet again nothing happens.

Keep Calm...and continue to prep. 🙂 The fact your already acknowledging something can happen and trying to prepare yourself for an emergency...well...thats half the battle. Your cups half full! 😉

Good words to live by. I've been at this a long while and have felt the same kind of panic at times - we had SARS right in the hospital down the street and a friend had to go in and have a baby! but thecrownsown is right - things come and go and all you can do is exactly what you are doing already. I get the feeling that prepping is really important to you and any money you can squeeze out of the budget is already going to help your family be better prepared. There's a limit to what is possible and please do NOT go into debt to finance being prepared.

Sometimes I turn off the news just so I stay sane! 😮

Oh my! I did not mean to imply that this was stressing me out that much. It's certainly not keeping me up at night, nor would I go into debt to get better prepared. I don't do debt LOL. I have been thinking about it, want to be better prepared, and realising if these things were to come fruition I'm not there. This is more about contemplation, but at a high enough level to spur me into action, ya know? I just wanted to know how people felt about the things that were happening, if they felt any sense of urgency. However, I see your point about headlines coming and going. Things will go on and on 🙂

I understand what you are saying, and while I try not to let the events of the day stress me out, they do concern me. I too realize, if and only if, something were to happen tomorrow, I am no where near as far along in my prepping as I would like. I have a set budget for my prepping and very rarely will exceed that amount, but some days I feel that maybe I should be. And my skill set is far below what would be required in a true SHTF scenario. Plus the fact that I am taking care of my parents (both of which are very ill) and this leaves little time to prepare as much as I would otherwise. But I keep moving forward knowing that at least I am better off than many others.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned a SHTF situation coming out of not just one, but multiple factors combining to become a major event.

It is very important to look into the number of major global issues that we are facing in our times. They are extremely numerous. A super extreme event is possible very soon, as a result of many factors, including pandemic, economic or environmental disaster, happening in conjunction with each other.

Unfortunately, trying to predict exactly when the mass of excrement will be entering the electrical propelled air circulating device, happens to take a huge toll on our mental wellbeing.

I am not really concerned about the issue of a pandemic combined with an economic shutdown in particular... I am, however, concerned about those two plus a sh**t tonne of other global issues that affect us on a daily basis. Including (but not limited to), Oil consumption, environmental toxicity, loss of habitat, loss of diversity, alteration of global water cycles, atmospheric gas composition, mass cognitive dissonance among our population, social illness, individual mental illness, evolutionary pit falls, economic and philosophical sickness, monetary fabrication and insanity, food system disconnect, survival disconnect... etc.

What eventually causes our preparations to be super relevant is impossible to predict. Fun to speculate, but impossible to predict.

Alarm bells are warranted, no doubt, but I'm working heavily on using that alarm sourced energy to channel into long term positive action lessening the effects off all the above mentioned deteriorating factors.

That means, keeping your eye on your prepping goals adjusting the blinders if need be.

Also, look out for high oil and food prices due to peak oil, the same driven by global warming, and results of both, including more social unrest.
