I've been thinking for awhile that it would be handy to have a "cheat sheet" with all the tips about what can be done to mitigate the symptoms of a cold and to reduce the possibility of transferring it to the whole household. My goal is to post in on the inside of a kitchen cabinet for easy reference.
Take extra vitamin C
Take extra garlic
Drink lots of echinacea and other tea with honey
Pull out the hand sanitizer
wash hands more often
Add a tsp. of bleach to the dish washing water to kill germs
etc.
Please add your tips to the list and I'll combine them in a concise "cheat sheet' for everyone to use.

Cold-FX works for me, echinacea not so much.
Vitamin A, C, and D
Garlic - scrape some on dry toast, then add butter - wow
NAKA Vital Greens
Sambu - elderberry extract
Ginger
Drink lots of tea with honey
Steamer/vaporizer in my bedroom.
Large tea with 1/2 a lemon(yes, half) squeezed in and enough honey to be drinkable. Drink 1 cup or two as fast as you can manage, put on your woolies and sleep/sweat it out.
Unfortunately, a cold is caused by an air-borne virus and once it invades our bodies it begins to reproduce and spread before you know it. Keeping your house "virus unfriendly" would help in the first place - keep a dollarstore spray bottle full of alcohol or bleachy water (2 tablespoons of bleach and the rest water) and spray on surfaces like light switches, telephones, sink handles, toilet flusher, computer keys (spray on a cloth and wipe keys), car steering wheel, etc. Change hand towels, dish cloths, dish towels, etc. daily.
I guess all I hope for when I get a cold is to make myself more comfortable in my misery....
Peel a whole lemon and chop=antiseptic.Put in large cup of boiled water with a heaping tablespoon of unpasteurised honey=antibiotic.Add two teabags of strong black or green tea=antihistamine.Let steep for10-20 minutes til cool enough to drink.Eat lemon.Discard tea bags after squeezing out oils.Drink liquid.Wait for 30-60-minutes til symptoms disappear and return to activities.
Infection control like mentioned above is great. Keep your hands clean at all times, wipe down common surfaces, etc. Vinegar is a great disinfectant. You have to be careful about using potent disinfectants like bleach, lysol, etc. as they will also kill various "good" or helpful bacteria you will have throughout your environment.
For a virus, all you can do is wait it out. Get plenty of rest/sleep, watch your nutrition and eat properly, drink lots of water/fluids without caffeine.
Anything else listed above has no proven effect and the limited studies out there show they "may or may not" be as good as a placebo. A virus is a virus. For a bacteriological infection, there are a slew of anti biotics out there that a medical professional would prescribe, but again the sleep, nutrition, and fluids are the staple for recovery.

I took a course a few weeks ago and the instructor had come down with a cold which was giving her a nasty cough and we were all concerned about her (and ourselves) and none of us wanted to be out of commission with a cold. One of the other attendees who is a medical researcher talked her into using oil of oregano. She was really reluctant to try and finally couldn't take feeling rotten any longer...and said ok. You put a small amount from the dropper onto the very back of your tongue and "gargle" it around before swallowing. It worked unbelievably well and no one from the class caught her cold. The researcher was Asian and had been given this since she was a child. Next cold or sore throat I get, it will be off to the health food store!
