Was thinking the other about Diabetes. I have type 2 and I take daily insulin injections. If this runs out, would i be able to Get any more?. Or would there be an alternative solution for insulin. Even a natural/herbal solution. Or would stocking up on Insulin be any help?. Note: insulin needs to be kept in a cool place to work, as heat breaks it down.

My health is reasonable. I do tend to keep myself fit and try to eat healthy, most of the times.

My first question to you would be.. why are you diabetic? Has your MD discussed this with you? Overweight? Activity level? Diet? I am not being judgemental ..only seeking answers. There are a number of different reasons for type 2 diabetes. It may be worthwhile examining early diabetic diets from the 20's and 30's. Somewhat different than what is recommended now. Just a few thoughts.

I've been doing a lot of research on this as well as I also struggle with diabetes.
There's everything out there from this: http://www.juicefeasting.com/Projects/Books/ThereisaCureforDiabetes/tabid/189/Default.aspx

to eating a more traditional diet with organic animals fats ala Nourishing Traditions and Sally Fallon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvKdYUCUca8

Those two approaches are from one end of the spectrum to the other and pretty much ANYTHING is better than the totally processed fake food diet or SAD diet that "normal people" eat will provide some improvement.

I am not advocating either approach just putting them out there so you can see things for your self. I'm not sure where you are at with taking your own health seriously for yourself. I know many people just nod and accept without question everything the doctor says. I listen but I do my own research too - sometimes so I can understand what they said better (in their 1 minute spiel) or sometimes to see what else is out there especially when we've heard the dreaded - there's nothing else we can do speech - cancer for my sister (who is alive and well) and muscular dystrophy for DH -who is messing with the doctors charts because he is doing so well they don't know what to say (they also don't want to listen!)

Hi All

I'm Prediabetic and working on reversing the condition. Been going for walks, some weight training, cutting way back on my carbs and have been reading Prediabetes for Dummies by Alan L Rubin. It's a straight forward and easy to read book. He has written other Dummy books for Diabetes as well. If money is an issue it can be found online as a torrent but that book will be a few years old.

I think the OP was asking about insulin and what do you do if the supply of insulin is stopped or interrupted long term.

It's a valid concern. Diabetes is rampant now because of lifestyle, but also it is linked to Genetics. Its such a valid concern because you can prepare for a SHTF scenario...but if you can't get energy out of the food you consume...your dead. No amount of stored supplies will change that... Its a very real and very serious concern, and hence a really good question.

If you are insulin dependent, you will need insulin. Are there any alternatives? Nope. There are ways to stretch out the time after you've used up supplies including diet, reduction in calories, etc. but that will depend very much on each person. If you have little to no capacity of producing your own insulin, you simply cannot get energy from what you consume. The straight up fact is that if Insulin supply was interrupted, after you exhausted your supplies, your looking at a very slow and uncomfortable deterioration until your dead. Mellitus Type 2 diabetics who are non insulin dependent most likely are in a better position.

I have family too who are diabetic and I've wondered about this situation. They all store several months of insulin just as part of every day living, but even in optimal conditions (cool and dark) I think the shelf life is around a year... What can you expect in a severe situation? How was it made originally? Banting and Best didn't have 1/100 the technology and ability that current production has and yet discovered and were able to create sufficient amounts to extend life. What is the process in making insulin? These are questions you end up logically at..... I would never condone making your own when there are products of excellent quality in the market...but if you were in dire times...what is involved in the production of insulin?

And this very important question also leads me to think about other conditions...what if your on Cancer or heart medications or dependent on other life saving systems? Oxygen? Severe Allergies? It gets you thinking.... the OP has a real interesting question...
