What? No takers... Time to make a few people feel uncomfortable. OK...I'll bite.
It's easy (and kinda exciting) to get all caught up in the hooplah.
I remember when the Fukushima accident happened...there was talk of a nuclear cloud on it's way over the ocean headed right for the BC coast...and I swallowed it hook, line, sinker, fishing rod, fisherman, fishing boat and all!
Of course, this never happened anywhere near the scale that the fear mongering alarmists would have had me believe.
I think that was a real turning point for me in prepping...I knew from that point on that I had to "keep it real" and not get sucked in.
Here's the thing about the multitude of prepping websites...they sell advertising. I can't put anyone down for doing that, I do it too, which is how this forum keeps running.
But a LOT of them are doing it to make a living...which means they need a lot of advertisers.
To get them, and be able to charge premium rates, they need 2 things...top rankings on Google searches, and high visitor stats.
The Google search ratings are easy to get with some thoughtful meta tags and good SEO key words...the visitor stats though, well...
Some people create a following with logical, regular, and relevant content (Jack Spirko comes to mind) while others get that following with sensationalism(a multitude of others come to mind).
Once you get those sensationalist followers, keeping them coming back is easy...create sensational content. They need there "high" so keep giving it to them by creating the next SHTF, conspiracy, Obama death camp mumbo jumbo, and they keep clicking on your site, which keeps your advertisers happy and paying up.
This summer at the Survival Expo, there were helicopters flying around all day long...of course there were...they were tour helicopters flying tourists around the falls.
But that didn't stop me and a couple other exhibitors from whispering "blackhawks" and snickering every time we heard them.
Yes, it probably would have been easy to convince a lot of people that preppers were being watched by surveillance helicopters equipped with the latest and greatest top secret x-ray vision gagetery as we gathered in Niagara Falls...but that ain't the route we choose.
Tour helicopters become covert surveillance, harmless comets become planet x, military equipment shipped by train becomes continent wide martial law, and yes, a nuclear accident half way across the planet is going to make my junk glow in the dark by nightfall.
Well, at least I won't be needing my flaslight for that last one!

I'd agree with virtually everything you've said but would add a couple points:....social media; and lack of education...including scientific literacy add to the ongoing scenarios.

With every news story there is always a deluge of "alternative media sources" that may have elements of truth but often skewer things with conspiracies, political rants, and "what the government/main stream media dont want you to know." This spreads more disinformation and rumour, etc. that snowballs on itself creating an issue where none exists. People will bite onto something not because its factually true...but because its popular and if everyone believes it...it must be true. Main stream media is certainly not innocent of this...but would be a small fraction of what is found in the annals of Facebook, alternative media websites, etc. etc. etc.

Fukashima aside....the lack of scientific literacy today...(and I'm not talking Phd level more like Grade 11 Chemistry)...should be enough to quell the amount of pseudo science and panick thats caused from social media for every new pandemic, or disaster involving a chemical spill, or even Fukashima itself.... Knowledge trumps fear..or at least it should in these circumstances. And yes, even I've fallen for hype in certain instances and I consider myself fairly well versed in matters like this....

Profiting aside, there are those out there who feel strongly about their belief in a comet or some other disaster who without the motive of profit will use social media as an easy and efficient medium to reach the masses. A bit of marketing and a tantalizing message and it grabs traction.

As an aside...I would say Jack Spirko is...or at least has started to be infiltrated and doesnt always follow a logical method. I enjoy listening to his podcasts...but he often strays into topics which its clear he knows very little about. Vaccines, the education system, etc.... And it seems he's catering to a particular demograph of his listeners... but its evident that he lacks quite a bit of fundamental knowledge when he starts up on these topics and I'm not sure why he chooses to do that when overall he is quite a sharp and knowledgeable person with an expertise in so many other areas...

Just my two cents...lol.
