Well, Here we are at the end. We just finished the end of last years eggs...so I cant tell you how much longer they last for. Its October 16. Test complete.

Next test...how well do this years eggs do, reusing the old solution without bothering to boil it.

Here's an egg preserving idea I ran across.

"Preserve only eggs that are newly laid. Bury them in a box of salt.

This traditional way of keeping eggs has been almost forgotten. The eggs last about an year when they are totally buried in the salt. No air whatever must be allowed to get at the shells.

This way you’ll have eggs and salt for survival."

"The man who has a garden and a library has everything." - Cicero

Is there anything other than MINERAL oil to coat the eggs ? The mineral oil may leach inside .
However mineral oil is cheap enough for preppers to have on hand to coat the eggs.
I would say coating the eggs , is something we could be in a habit of doing even now.

Leaching may be less than ideal, but mineral oil is safe for consumption as it serves as a, ahem, "lubricant" for constipation issues.

On a different note, has anyone done any testing in this within this forum? Like coat a dozen eggs with mineral oil and let them sit unrefrigerated for say 6 months or longer?

My husband just showed me an article on storing eggs. It's from the European Union. They say to just store Unwashed eggs in flats in a cool place. The eggs will last at least six months stored this way. They say that if you wash the eggs prior to storage, the removed membrane will allow all the little unwanted ugly bugs to enter the eggs thru the shell. I have not tried this method, but my friend in Saskatchewan keeps her extra eggs on the shelf in the basement all winter, and only washes them just before use.
Hope this helps.
