IMO having a Mtn Bike is a very good option, even if you have a 4x4. Not only, as you pointed out, can you carry more gear and push your loaded bike; once you get where you are going a Mtn Bike offers an excellent method of moving around - scouting or conducting route recce's. Fast. Quiet compared to a motor vehicle. Capable of on or offroad travel. You can lift a bike over a fence, without having to cut it.
PrepNow, one option to a person with a Mtn Bike and trailer, is they can avoid some of the crowds and follow the railway tracks. Not to mention hiking trails, open fields, or river banks. If, you have a plan and a well thought out route and you leave before the crowds know there is a problem, IMO, I do not see why a bike unit would not be valuable. If you do not have a motor vehicle - for whatever reason (too young, DUI suspension, fitness nut) a bike or bike and trailer would be worth having.
Now if you do have a motor vehicle to get you out of the Burbs and you finally run out of fuel or your vehicle dies a mechanical death along the way I would prefer to have at least one more option before having to hit the ground running. A side-by-side quad with trailer or a Mtn Bike & trailer would both postpone the need to wear down the treads on my Danners.
Yes, being footborne is always an option, and at times, THE OPTION. But for the get out and go, a vehicle will still be the option most people will choose first.
That is just my two cents.

I hope this link works. Here is a Bug-Out Bike. i1211.photobucket.com/.../bugoutbike.jpg (I guess that didn't work. I will track down the URL and edit this message in a minute.)

Now THAT is a bike worth bugging out on! Thanks for posting.

Looks like a German Army Scout bike,
the only thing I would change up at quick glance would be to add some more padding on the old seat, us OLD guys have Infantry Knees and Infantry asses, we need more padding!
I think they are all good ideas. I plan on bugging out if shtf and i have planned for any eventuality i can think of. I have tested all my rutes except my walking routes as it would take a couple weeks to walk to my bug out location.
If you plan for what you are using to bug out, be it a car, bike or atv as long as you have planned properly you should be fine. I think we can all agree that staying away from the hords is a good thing and knowing the trails in your area and the area you are traveling to is also good. we are all smart enough to think ahead so what ever you chose plan and it should work.
Bikes just became a option for me as both my older boys just learned to ride with out training wheels. i will be going for rides with them every weekend just to make sure they are ready just in case.

Combine that with a motor assist and a bike trailer and were all set to bug out.

my 5 year old has his own atv that can pull a trailer and my other son can ride on the back so that is a possibility. i now have 8 20l gsa cans fulled up in the garage so i ahve lots of fuel. i buy the tall ones from ct, they are the same shape as the army cans and are easy to store and tie to the bikes.

Be sure to rotate the fuel or use fuel stabilizers, but I'm sure you knew this already. 😉

Sorry, letting my ignorance show here, what are fuel stabilisers?

They preserve your petrol, so that it doesn’t start separating and render the fuel useless except for lamp oil. If kept in an engine too long with out using, it can/will turn into shellach and clog the fuel lines.

Thanks for that Ranger - much appreciated.

Now the clips from this YouTuber are even a bit more useful, although they are longer.

I plan on buging out before it happens.... there is a group of us and we will be leaving before it happens. that is the best idea. we have contingency plans as well but getting out prior to it happening is best. all our gear will already be at the bug out location we will have 10 days worth of essentials with us untill we leave. The bug out location will be compleeted in july and i am purchesing a 10 foot enclosed trailer to retrofit as a bug out trailer that will store our stuff at that location complete with solar panels tool room and living area in case we have extra people show up. work on the emp proof bov will be starting soon and i will post videos... all should be ready around sept of this year. Cant wait to get to work!

That is all well and good, but when will it happen. I'm not meaning to cut you down, Yes it is good to be prepared and have a BOL, but unless you have a glimpse of the future you will never know. I am hoping that the signs leading up to a collapse are not misleading and catches most of us in a bind. Being prepared is good, but keeping your foot on the start line can be very tiring, to the point that you will miss the start signal.
