Bumping.. no reply on this,thought?

Summer Meeting place idea #1

A meet in the middle as we have folks coming from ottawa, montreal, rockland etc.. I am putting up P1 site, pro's private in the forest itself, most folks go to P2, big shelter with tables, outdoor bathroom, and room for the kids to play, and for folks to mingle and even for a little exploring, often has animal tracks, and a good amount of plants that can be found that could be used for eating an or medical uses. Con's, it does not to my knowledge allow open fires, but can't see any issues at all with using the ecozoom stove etc, no way to book it, but I can get thinks set up early to hold our space, and last but not least, lots of bugs! bring the bug spay..

http://www.ofnc.ca/conservation/larose/index.php

To get to P1, take Highway 417 to exit 79 (well-marked since this is the exit for Calypso Waterpark). Go through the town of Limoges and follow the sharp right curve in the road onto Saumure Road. Stay on this road — the name changes to Indian Creek — and take the second left onto a road which is also Indian Creek. You’ll find P1 less than a kilometre down this road.

To reach P2, make your way to the town of Bourget, head south along Champlain Street (also known as County Road 8) for about two kilometres and you’ll see the parking on the right side of the road.

If anyone has a place or idea that they would recommend, please let me know and I will check into it..

I love the idea of the first place because it's within half an hour of my aunt place - she will be thrilled I am coming for a visit!!!

I have decided I'm coming for sure 🙂

Meeting Place Idea #2: I honestly think that this is way too far out of town (Ottawa), as it's 45 minutes east of Ottawa. The city itself seems central enough for others coming from out of town (from north or west via Hwy. 7, Hwy. 417, south from Hwy. 416). There are lots of parks or conservation areas right in the city - I was thinking that we would meet somewhere along the 417 or 416 rather than east near Calypso. Suggestions: 1. Andrew Haydon Park (almost at the 417 and 416 - just off Carling Ave.-I was there once on Canada Day and it seemed like a pretty nice park ) It's free, BBQ, picnic tables, along the Ottawa River, lots of room . 2. Baxter Conservation Area (1 km off Hwy 416, 20 minutes south of Hwy 417) $6.00 per car day use, picnic shelter, BBQ, beach http://www.rvca.ca/careas/baxter/index.html . 3. Rideau River Provincial Park - (few kilometers off Hwy 416, 20 minutes south of Hwy 417, Ottawa) -Day Use fee $10.75 per car. BBQs, Picnic Shelter, beach, camping http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/ride.html . All these places are in the City of Ottawa.
Of course, there are lots of smaller parks in the city as well and many 'trails' areas.

hmmm, I am open to the idea of closer to the city if that is what folks want, having said that, I would perfer to keep it free if possable, (as in no car per use fee or no camping site fee) but I should ask if others feel the same way, do you want a free site with free parking or are you willing to pay either a site fee or a day or parking fee and what is your price range.

As for Andrew Haydon Park, I just went and checked it out online, I have never been there but the different sites said that there will be various performing artists, and or concerts thoughtout the summer. given the meetings is a sunday, we could have the possablity of some good size crowds at the park.

I have been researching two other spots but they were both out of the city itself and both in bush areas, smaller out of the way places and the odds would be good that we would be the only ones there and would have the place to ourselves.

So are we looking for a general local park in ottawa proper or are we looking for a meeting place outside the city to have more of a bush/just us feel? Having read the feedback from other meetings/gatherings with show and tells, it did appear that looking for a more private place seemed like a good idea. I heard camping and just went bush 🙂 but of course that does not need to be so.

Site #1-Lorose Forest
Site #2- Andrew Haydon Park
Site #3-Baxter Conseration Area
Site #4- Rideau Provinacial Park
Site #5-
Site #6

Please feel free to make other places for idea's if you know of somewhere you would like to have a gathering at? Prepher, do you know of any trail area's that would have a day use area with picnic tables under cover with bathrooms, that would be still in the city limits but not in the city itself? that don't have a car or day fee? I just spent the last 40 min googling and I really want my backpacking map book that I have at home..sigh..

Head count for who is interested on coming for the July meeting in the ottawa area per the thread itself for the July 15th meeting at 11am, pot luck, show and tell and get together/visit.

Prepher
Denob (with little ones)
Anita
Farmgal (and hubby)
Polearm (and wife) with little one
Georges
Calora
Grangrees
whisperz
decadude
Mom2two
OldSchool
Mamaizzy

Did I miss anyone?

For myself, I will go where ever the group decides to go, but having said that, myself and DH are voting for the Lorose Forest site (having said that, I think that Prepher has a great point and if that does end up being the place, then I would recommend that a aug/sept outdoor get together be on the other side of ottawa towards the kemptville side, I know that we said winter get togethers would be indoors in ottawa proper) polearm and wife are not on the board but are looking forward to coming, they are in the rockland area, and are happy with the 25 min drive time. I know that they would be wiling to do a ottawa timing as well.

Come out and vote folks! I can't wait to meet you Anita! that's awesome news that you are going to be able to make it!! Great that the date is booked Denob!, what are you bringing for show and tell? Look forward to meeting you Georges.

Ps, I thought old school had a great point, for the potluck, it might be a great idea to write out the recipes to go with so that anyone with food allergies would be able to see what is in the items themselves, that would be really great if everyone would consider doing that, please and thanks you so much..

I am planning on bringing lamb, Potato salad, fresh buns, some canned and dried goods and we will see what is ready in the garden fresh that morning but a big jug of applemint tea is a for sure 🙂

As the out-of-province guest, I vote for what everyone else decides. The wife will be dumping me off with one or two little ones and then heading out on her own. They do have Bulk Barn in Ottawa right?

Farmgal, you have a good point about possible crowds at Andrew Haydon Park on a Sunday..... But there IS lots of room and other things for family members to do like swimming, playground, etc. Something to consider for sure. I also side with a fee free meet. I was just throwing out some suggestions.
I'll do some more checking about trails - I've passed many of them over the years - to see if any offer a sheltered 'picnic' area.
And remember also about the potluck: it's summer so make sure everyone keeps food cold during the transport to the meeting.
MORE INPUT PLEASE. Don't be shy!

Do you think we need to have a rain contingency plan? i.e. inside somewhere?

Well, that would depend in I think on where we have it, if we pick a park, then we could see if anyone had a pop-up shelter they can bring? or agree, a backup place would be a good idea.. if we can find a site with roof, it should be fine, the one that I was looking at, has a huge roof cover with a number of picnic tables under it

If we are looking for a different trail site, that's fine but I would ideally like to find something like it.. note the flowers were there for opening day, but they are not there normally..

Would we be able to have the meet there, depending on the location? and I will let the out of town folks chime in on the cabin but that sounds awesome! thanks so much for seeing if any of those would work.. It sure would be nice to have a place to get in out of the weather if it turned.
