Yeah and I agree with Carbon also ;o) Hehehe

I never care about the stuff people say behind my back, oddly enough.
We have a lot of issues to sort out in this country. Freemen aren't helping. They don't want to help but I'm sure they wish us luck.
big thumbs up to that our kid!!! 😀

Made up my mind when our small town announced they were doing terrorist drills. What a load of crap that is.
Terrorist drills??? What town was this? Kabul?
"I think that I am very reasonable therefore ......." ICRCC
Well sort of.....schools now practice "lock-downs" even the little kindergarteners. And the 'terrorists' might actually be another student......it's a pretty sad state of affairs. Hats off to you Gravlore for making your uncommon decision to put family first. I make so little money that I haven't paid federal taxes in years....but I tell 'ya, I pay my fair share in GST, Property taxes, etc out of my meager income. Bravo!
Avoid taxes by making less. I sold my house in the city and paid cash for a new tractor and the land. 25K to build the house and me and mine are set. We used to make 80K per year in the city but now live off less than 25K. Grow own food and chop wood for heat. My wife makes more than I did so I am a stay at home dad and gardener. She works 12 days a month and we have the rest of the time for our children who WILL be home schooled. Made up my mind when our small town announced they were doing terrorist drills. What a load of crap that is.
This is what we have been trying to figure out...the idea of opting out of 'the dream'. How to make a transition to a rural setting, without needing to travel 100km round trip, 5 days a week, or relying on a full time job punching a clock.
While the FMOTL movement may be way too 'fringe', the idea of opting out is catching on. http://alt-market.com/safehaven/236-chris-beckman-on-the-safe-haven-project
It is definitely a trend now--people searching out a real community to live simpler, and be more self reliant. Stepping out from behind their avatars and taking the chance of 'friending, poking and liking' like-minded people...in real life!
There is a right way to 'push' back, and it does need to happen soon. I don't agree with all the 'junk laws' we have in North America...the ones there just to generate revenue for an ever expanding, behemoth of a government, padding the pensions and entitlements of the 1%. The more entitlements we expect, the larger our government needs to be...but we can't have all the entitlements without giving up all our freedoms too. That is what the Freeman on the Land are trying to do...have all the freedoms and entitlements.
I still think, if there is a bond traded on the market, that is worth millions and is attached to my birth certificate and I can tap into some of that....legally.... I want some 😈
One day, the lowly farmer will be King
I think the FMOTL are extremists... but at least they're taking some inititive. A lot of people sit around and complain about how bad it is, or how someone else is getting more than their fair share. We don't have to take it to that extreme but I'll give you an example of what makes my blood boil. I would like to live on a piece of land where I won't be bothered. I'd be ok with living in the bush in a little cabin,, with all of the conveniences like running water, heat, and a comfy, cozy, bed. I want to be self sufficient- gardening, foraging, selling crafts or something for a bit of income, and live close enough to a community for some socializing on occassion. I could afford to buy the land, but not the building permit, and the materials for the size of house I would have to build according to Ontario builders... whatever it's called. Many of the regulations imposed on us by these building laws are ridiculous. Tell my why they care whether I live in a 200 sq ft or 2000 sq ft. home? They say in some municipalities you're looking at 30K before you even put a shovel in the ground.
For the past year I have lived in a 256 sq ft. cottage with my 3 cats. There is a gas fireplace to heat the whole cabin. Some days I look around and say "why do I need all of this space?" Oh it's for the cats, they get cabin fever in the winter and like to race around a bit. I feel a little guilty, but not enough to build some mcmansion so the cats can exercise. And I guess I need lots of space for storing food, ammo and my book collection on how to live in the woods on $5 a day.
I know I'm ranting, but no one else seems to get it. The FMOTL get it, but they're extremists.

I think you're one of the few who does get it. Our future is going to be about getting by with less.
People want to know how to solar power their 2000 sq ft stick built with all the appliances including AC. Just not gonna happen.

why is that impractical? the farmer across the road from my place just put 50 200w solar panels on the roof of his barn....even on a cloudy day it more than covers his hydro need for him, his wife and teenage girls...

I know one person who will be happy with austerity. I for one, do not want less for my son.
Try thinking about what you're advocating and what it means in a larger scale. I am continually stunned by comments and mindsets like yours.

i agree 100%....why should my kids go without?

What I'm advocating is that we stop being pigs with the earth's resources. You don't need to drive a 6000 lb SUV around town by yourself at 10 mpg. Heat your pool to 90 deg with fossil fuels and let half of it escape overnight. Do you need to use treated, potable water to spray over acres of grass? We're complete idiots to make plastic things out of fossil fuels and then throw them away after a year.
Do you realize if everyone lived as North Americans now do it would take the resources of 3 planet earths? Last time I checked we only have one.
Build houses properly instead of just cheap and they would get half or more of their heat from the sun and cooled by the earth. Steel roofs last over 50 years and can be recycled instead of filling landfills with shingles and tar paper.
Wash clothes, water gardens, flush toilets with rainwater instead of treated water.
Don't buy cheap junk that you throw away when it stops working.
Quality of life is not measured by how many garbage bags you can fill each week.

Here, here. Good thoughts, well said.
Well Perfesser & vanislemom am I missing something? Is there a possibility that greed and a sense of entitlement is what has caused many, if not all, of the problems we are facing with the economy and the environment? Why do we think we have to prep, it's obvious that nothing is wrong with the system the way it is? Some people just don't "get it" and never will!
