Hi, does anyone know where one can purchase freeze-dried food in Ontario? I'm writing out of Kitchener-Waterloo. thanks!
Costco carries Thrive and Mountainhouse. They deliver and delivery is included in the price.
Costco does have FD stuff but you are limited to their packages. Good for starting out though.
Meats and fats are the hard things to find anywhere.
Providence Supplies has Thrive stuff but there's no meat, only (blech) TVP.

Forest City Surplus has Mountain House at pretty good prices.

Bauly Foods is another, terrible website but at least they've been around a long time.

I'm just now trying to get an order through to try the stuff but I haven't had a reply from my mail after 3 days. I'll be phoning them on Monday to get the ball rolling. I'm trying a small order of their food for taste and as they're about the only place I've found real meat I'll probably be ordering from there to round out my supply of Thrive veggies.
I'm a Paleo eater so I'm doing very little in the way of grains, beans and rice but that stuff stores well from regular store bought stuff.
Given that the topic is freeze dried, I am switching it just a bit but its right in line with the meat and paleo, have you give though to learning how to salt cure and hang meats if you have a cooler closet or celler/basement etc, I have now done a full year on salted cured meats with success (I have done both smoked and unsmoked, its the salt that has the staying power), and I have a two year experement going on a leg of lamb.
For what its worth, I have found issues with even properly done sausages in our humid and hot summers here in ontario, I finally figured out how to fix it but it would not be a easy cure for most, I took to hanging them in my underground dry cistern to keep the cooler temps, the books said I would not have issues but real life said, on certain recipes I used, it turned out a little different..

Thanks I'm just getting starting with curing. Made a few batches of Biltong - have no room for a smoker yet till we move but I will look closer into salt curing. I do have a decent cold storage room here, small but cold.
Want a pressure canner for meats too. So much prepping, so little time.........
not that i've had a lot of other freeze dried food, but i like the taste of it. like it enough to of dropped 2K + on it. i buy mostly the bulk stuff, not the meals. . .

They are down the street from my office, and so I drop by there fairly regularly. Unfortunately I think they stocked MREs for all of a week last year, and have not seen freeze dried goods there ever. They are slowly evolving into a dollar store/bargain shop type of outlet....I don't put much weight on them anymore for anything else unfortunately. Of course the big russian tank out front is just cool! 🙂
There isn't a whole lot locally to purchase from...unless you goto a wildnerness camping store and pay outrageiously high prices.

well... that is not good. It was a favourite spot for me to go when I visited my Parents in the area.
Maybe I can shed some light here...
You see, army surplus stores can actually make a lot of money on used surplus. When they buy it dirt cheap from distributors who get it from auction, there is a really high markup on it.
Smaller commercial items are not considered a good investment of the owner's capitol.
For example, back in the 80's when I worked at a surplus store, the newest gadget was Cyalum Light Sticks.
In order to sell them, you had to be at least in the same range as the other stores that sell them. Perhaps you could get $1.50 per stick but paid $1.25.
For every $1000.00 you spent, you could expect a return of $200 and it would take many months to sell 800 light sticks.
The same goes for freeze dried food and MRE's...low profit for the layout.
I do remember however, that we used to get REAL US and Canadian military MRE's...but the expiration dates were not very far away...the reason they were sold as surplus in the first place.
I will say though, that the actual mre's were much better than the commercial stuff you get today. Each one had instant coffee, sugar, whitener, hard candy or gum, etc.
My post wasn't' a dig at KW Surplus, or any Army Surplus store. In fact, I go to KW Surplus regularly for common goods as they are still cheaper than anyone in town. From electronics, wiring, household cleaners, etc. I see your point re: what they purchase, and the economy will drive what they will purchase, and sell.
Its just common business sense if they want to turn a profit.
Are there any good Army surplus stores in London, or towards Toronto where they would sell items such as MRE's, survival equipment, etc.?

thecrownsown,
I think Denob was just sharing info on the behind the scenes reasoning but was not digging at your comments. Later I will dig up a biz card for an Army Surplus that is near the DVP & Eglington area. I know them personally and they have lots of product and decent to great prices for the area.
cheers
