My best friend is now a shelf reliance rep here in Ontario and you can do a house party and now have it delivered monthly. For example I will be spending a small portion of my monthly food budget on freeze dried food...it is actually quite yummy...if you need more info, please contact me. I have lots of stuff to make hamburger/sauces, very good, and the chicken is so good you'd not know it was reconstituted. I plan on using it regularly.

Have you tried looking at the Bulk Barn? I know they have an assortment of dehydrated food. They might have some freeze dried as well.

thanks for your responses everyone. I will look into Costco and call some of the other places you mentioned. I had the same experience at KW Surplus - no luck for freeze dried food.

Look in the search feature here for Grain Process in Toronto.
Bulk Barn and a few others get their stuff from there. = recently I asked at Bulk Food Barn for a price on Ameranth and Quinoe in 25k packages, wow.. they quoted me $100 and $115 and that was with a 10% DISCOUNT!

Grain Process sells the same bulk bags for about $30-$35 (last time I checked the pricing there)quite the markup!!

I thought I would post an update on Bauly foods. Apparently the owner died rather suddenly and they've had some trouble dealing with it all but I received mail and a phone call from the family.
My order came today.

Quinoa and Amaranth are of the same family as Pigweed and Lamb's Quarters. They're probably easy enough to grow anywhere.

There are so many similarities between quinoa (keen' wah) and amaranth that it seems appropriate to describe them together. Quinoa, however, is a cool weather crop and amaranth is a warm weather one.

Quinoa and amaranth are two very old, high-protein plants that hail from South America. They were held sacred in ancient Inca and Aztec cultures. Both now hold great potential for self-sustaining gardens in the northern hemisphere. They grow as easily as their weedy relatives (pigweed or lamb's-quarters) and the quality of food they offer far surpasses that of our common grains. Traditional hand-harvesting methods can obtain bounteous harvests.

I have been getting monthly shipments of Shelf Reliance dehydrated and freeze dried food for a few months now. I have hamburger and roast beef and chicken and blueberries and raspberries and peaches and merengue cookies and brownies and milk and butter and sour cream and all sorts of veggies! I've put most into my food storage it i am also using it too. I make a mean spaghetti sauce with freeze dried tomato powder and freeze dried mushrooms and green peppers...add in some freeze dried hamburger and spices and yummy! I spend about $100 a month and it is shipped right to my door. I am very happy with it, building up my storage over time makes it easy on my wallet while giving me lots of choices of how I want to spend my money on. If you want more info let me know. I do not work for the company but can put you in touch with someone who is a consultant.

Jeffro, have you tried any of this stuff? What does it taste like? I'm interested in the product but worried about taste. I think the Thrive is distributed by Briden also?

Here's a Freeze Dried Foods Review Thread, a few Thrive foods are reviewed here:

DaScribbler.

do you work for Briden or have an interest in the company? The reason I ask is that all your reviews seem really positive on the products they offer. I've seen lots of product reviews on the net all positive on Briden, and some very articulate. More so than I'd expect from the average person out there.

I am hoping to hear from someone at large about the Thrive products and since Jeffro just bought it hoping he'd give some first hand info. Not that I'm doubting your reviews. Please understand that. But I want to make sure I'm getting an unbiased opinion. If you have no interest in the company and your product reviews are legit, then awesome. That will help me to make my purchasing decision.

I recently bought the 5 Gal. emergency food bucket from Briden. It had great reviews. Last week we decided to try out the creamy rice just so we knew what we were getting. It was awful. Tasted like there was soap or Lye in the food, and my wife said her tongue started to tingle... If ever in an emergency, the calories and nutrition are there and we would eat it...but for the price, and the "reviews", we were expecting way more than what we got. That food ended up in the trash. It has no place on anyone's plate except in a worse case scenario. This WAS NOT the Thrive line of food. It was something else. It appears they've removed the 5 gal. bucket from there product line very recently. I'll be calling them about what we got, and whether there was a QA issue or something.

thecrownsown,

I don't work for Briden, I'm just a very satisfied customer. So far, all the products I've tried from Thrive I've been quite happy with. My Freeze Dried Food supply is primarily Thrive so I imagine eventually I'll open something that I won't like, but I'm hoping not. I also have Freeze Dried Product from Mountain House and Food For Health, but have yet to try anything from my Mountain House supplies (Its so pricey I hate to open it if I don't have to).

You mentioned you tried the Creamy Rice from your Food for Health Bucket and didn't care for it. I'll have to dig into mine and try it. So far the Cheesy Broccoli is the only one I've tried from that bucket and I thought it was pretty good.

But in reading my reviews, please don't just take my word for anything, continue to do your own research and maybe order some Mylar pouches of some of the products (they are typically only 3 - 5 servings) this way you can sample small amounts of the various products and if you find something you like then you know you can safely order the large #10 cans of it.

I know there are other Freeze Dried Food companies out there, but so far most of my experience has been with Thrive and I'm glad to say that for the most part its been quite positive (their FD Meat prices scare me, so I've leaned towards Mountain House for this). If I find a decent price on Freeze Dried Foods from another company I'll be more then happy to try their product. I guess with Thrive and Bridens I just got lucky and found a product I like from a company with great service.

Hi everyone. Yes, the Costco order i put in was also Thrive, however, I have not sampled any of it yet. I have no doubt it will be good. for now just trying to use up a lot of my canned food 🙂

Freeze dried food has also reminded me of the importance of water as this is necessary for the preparation of it. I have several large plastic water cooler jugs. how are some of you storing water, or do you have access to your own well, etc?

I have about 25 Gallons of bottled water sitting in a closet. It has an expiry date on it for some reason, but I'm not worried about that, I'll just run it through a Brita or berkey water filter before I drink or cook with it if need be.

However, some of the freeze dried foods I've tried are great in their freeze dried state.
