Disclaimer (for whom it may be important): I am not a mormon, and I am not affiliated with LDS in any way whatsoever.

For anyone looking into arranging some food for long term storage... And I expect this to be everyone here... 😎
I would like to HIGHLY recommend this centre.
The address is 85 Queens Plate Drive, Etobicoke, Ontario, M9W 7K4, but you'll need to call them in advance to arrange an appointment: 416-741-3253.
They accept appointments for Tuesdays 10 am to 1 pm, and Saturdays 9 am to 12 pm.

The general idea is that you select as much as you want from the list available here, and either can these foods into #10 cans, or pack them into Mylar bags (they call them "pouches").
They provide the cans, the lids, the oxygen absorbers, and the boxes holding 6 cans each. And, of course, the canning/sealing equipment.
Everything's super-clean like in a surgery room.
The hosts are super-polite and super-helpful.
The foods are grown at LDS's own farmlands in Alberta.
And the prices are very reasonable.

You can even buy some cans and borrow a portable canner, to can some supplies at home!

P.S. We in the GTA may consider ourselves lucky: this is the only such centre east of Alberta! 😀

Update: modified the link to the price list, following Anita's heads-up

khk - I was going to ask the poster who wrote about the cannery in Alberta about the one in TO. I wondered if they were as open to having non LDS members use the facilities. I am interested!! Thanks so much for posting! 🙂

I remember seeing a price list a long time ago - is there a current one available for the TO location?

I believe that's the up-to-date list, more or less (I haven't compared the prices in each and every line, but they seem to be right).

And no, they do not limit the attendance to LDS members only, by no means.
Quite frankly, being far from Christian myself, I had my suspicions about whether they'll try to "convert" me, or at least to gently push me in that direction... Not at all! Not a single question, not a slightest hint. I've got nothing but my deepest respect to these people - now more than ever! 🙂

Forgive me for asking again....but there doesn't seem to BE prices on that page - just suggestions for food to be stored.

Oh nevermind - here's a link. http://providentliving.org/bc/providentliving/content/english/self-reliance/food-storage/home-storage-center-order-form/pdf/OrderForm_Canada_pdf.pdf?lang=eng

Thanks!

Yeah, I thought that's the link I posted... Turns out I pasted a wrong one 😉
Meant the one you posted here, indeed.

I'm going to try to ask this question tactfully because I'm meaning no offense here, so here goes:

This looks really good. It's a fantastic service and the prices are beyond reasonable. But it's via an organized religion, also one known for being pretty active at trying to convert/push their beliefs.

Myself, I'm not Mormon, I don't care if you are but I do NOT want to be bugged about joining a religion.

So if you walk in there as some sort of Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, or no religion, can you expect to have your beliefs and lifestyle respected? Do you have to give them your address? Or is it an anonymous thing. Like, Hi, I'm Mike, you guys rock, thanks for the cheap beans, here's the money, see ya'll later.

khk have you been to this place? If you are Mormon I expect the above is moot for you, but could you provide some insight into that at all?

Red, I had exactly the same concern when setting up an appointment. But...

Quite frankly, being far from Christian myself, I had my suspicions about whether they'll try to "convert" me, or at least to gently push me in that direction... Not at all! Not a single question, not a slightest hint.

Yup, they let mind your own business alright 😎

And no, you don't need to give them any personal info - unless you want to borrow a portable canner (in which case they, obviously, would want to have some control over where it is going and how they can get back eventually 😉 )

Redneck - I think all of us would be at least a little concerned about that. I have heard from several people now that the people volunteering at the Storehouses have been very polite and helpful with no pressure whatsoever. I am going to make an appointment for sometime soon and take notes and perhaps take some pictures (if I'm allowed).

Road trip!!! Anyone interested in coming with me?? Perhaps as a group people would feel less uncomfortable. Please PM me and I will see what I can arrange.

BTW, they limit the attendance to not more than 14 people at a time, for safety reasons. So make sure the group you assemble doesn't exceed that number 😉

You so completely missed the point of what I said it isn't funny. You should read it again and have a good hard think.

That's very fair! That being the case these are some good people and I'm VERY interested in their service.
