I discovered the hard way that I really need to check my car preps and not assume they are where they are suppose to be. Had a flat tire yesterday- no jack, no tire iron and my spare was flat.
How often do you check your preps?
Weekly. My kids (teenaged boys who are know it alls) move stuff all the time or use it and "forget" to put it back. I have check lists and can now spot something moved out of place pretty quick.
thanks, the check list is a good idea.
Sometimes you can get into a lot of trouble if you don't have your preps in place (like late at night) but, it usually only happens once and you get to be a bit obsessive about them after than. Nothing like a good scare to keep you on your toes.

stupid thing is I have been discussing what preps to keep in my car and the stuff to fix a flat never came up ggggrrr
Yep...that's always the way it happens (the most obvious is just assumed to be fine). I'm actually thinking about getting one of those car jacks that slides underneath and raises the entire side of the car (great for when the surface you're working on is uneven). I check my spare tyre every month to make sure it hasn't gone down - and I've got spare water, oil, transmission fluid and brake fluid in a tub in the boot. Also got some spare radiator hoses and air induction hoses as well (just in case).

I guess that's why growing up I was always told not to assume anything. Too bad I stopped listening to what I was told
Almost every flat can be pumped up enough to get somewhere else.
In my car I keep a battery pack from CT. It will jump start the car, has 115v outlet for small loads, and an air compressor. Everyone should have one. Plugs in to your lighter socket every now and then to stay at full charge.
A can of that "instant fix" flat tire repair is a good idea too.
And a small kit with blanket, hat, mitts, for the winter. A good shovel with a short handle(not some folding plastic garbage that will fall apart the first time), a bush saw and tow strap or some chain(I've had to cut and drag a tree out of the way more than once after an ice storm and once had to cut wood for under the tires to get unstuck). Also at CT is a thing in the camping section called a Magic Heat stove. Like Sterno but very small, a canteen cup and bottle filled with Cup-a-soup packets, hot chocolate, tea and the like. A FD camping meal if you really want.

Ouch. That's a tough lesson. I usually keep my oil changed regularly, check my tires and fluids once a week and try to keep the vehicles tank topped up. My tire changing tools never leave the truck and I keep a small basic tool kit, AC & DC cell chargers, jumper cables, a can of flat fix, heavy jacket, rain poncho, hand tire pump, gloves, boots, hat, road map, flashlight, blanket, 1 gallon of drinking water, lighter and a few energy bars in the vehicle at all times even in the city. I keep $40 cash and enough payphone change tucked away for emergencies. I also keep a piece of paper with important numbers on it in case I lose my phone. One thing I have been meaning to do is stash a key somewhere on the frame/body of the truck just in case I lose my keys far from home.
Thanks for reminding me to check my spare.
