I'm not really sure what the official name of these plastic crates are but I found a source on kijiji - 1000L rain water storage tanks.
They are food grade - used to hold grape juice concentrate - $130.00. He'll give a small discount for multiple orders. I'm heading out next week to pick up a couple. They are in the Kitchener area and apparently he still has 25 - 30 left.

Great Deal, I can get them locally (within 25 min of me) that held yogurt for 200, so you have a great deal there, now if you want a really interesting idea given that you can get them at a cheaper price, in my local goat group, someone took two of these, cut the metal wire just enough to be kids or lamb door, cut the plastic to do the same, stuffed in some bedding and voila instant movable baby shelters, the kids loved it, and would go in to sleep etc..

Personally until I had a few for extra water storage, I would not be thinking about doing that but it was without a doubt a excellent rock solid kid/lamb/piglet hut that was for sure..

Farmgal, I would be interested in knowing who your local supplier is if it is closer to Belleville then Kitchener is.

Hi,

I looked at one of these, the reason i didnt buy it was i could not get it in through my basement door.
Depending on where you want to keep this, dimensions may come into play.
I would have no use for a 4ft cubed block of ice outside.

I went with 2 x 500l storage tanks. They fit through the doorway and i like the idea of having 2 seperate storages containers.

Ha! thanks for the post. I'm gonna cal this aft and order one!

The seller is right around the corner from me! When your traveling out for your order, add 1/2 hour extra to your time to get here. He's actually in Woolwich township. Which is St. Jacob's/Elmira area. He's north of Kitchener more into the rural farm area.

Spinkx79 - I would never get one in my basement either but I don't really need any more people water storage. I am looking at redirecting all the water off the barn roof and the garage roof and using it for the animals and the gardens.

An animal shelter never occured to me farmgal - I can see how it would be nice and warm and dry. I'm already going to need a truck and it's full 🙂

Go on kijiji, you can find them for $90-$110 all day in the "toronto/gta" area. Less if you purchase more. $130 isnt that good of a deal unless you live next door. To travel it would suck. But they are a very good idea if you have property for them! 🙂

yea definitely. They average $110 on kijiji, but just a couple weeks ago i found a link (that i have saved) that has them for cheaper, as well as hundreds of barrels, plastic, cardboard, metal, etc ALL SIZES, ones you put on those carries and wear as a back pack and the bigger rain catchment styles. Definitely deals out there and these type of things dont move that quickly so I would imagine you can talk the sellers down!!

The problem is that someone gets in the sellers ear that everyone wants them and then they get greedy. Not everyone wants a steel caged tote in their yard. I dont care if I do since I dont live in the city, but I got a 1250 GALLON container that has no yellowing or algae in it for $300. I find smaller ones cost more Per gallon though. There were some food grade here for 80 bucks and non food I could get for 40-50.

They are called IBC, Intermediate bulk container, i have personally dealt with that seller twice, he's a very honest guy. i've bought all my IBC's from him, and at least 30 steel 55 gal open top drums. he gives discounts if you buy more then 3 IBC's, and made it worth the drive for me.

i posted about him before, and he did say i could pass on his email, but i'm not going to give that out on the public board, but you have his add, so you can contact him. if the add comes down and you need his info please PM me. (a few have already.)

he's a good guy, and i'd buy from him again in the future.
