Gravlore, how long do the filters last if not used, or after first use? 6000 gallon production before changing the filter is an awful lot of water, and ideal for my family as a small unit!

Dagpools comment on the shelf life of the lifesaver filter caught my attention....replacing the filters every three years doesn't sound optimal.

I just don't understand why someone would choose something other than Berkey (purifiers). Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

Berkey filters more stuff than Sawyer (metals and such) but it's limited in the quantity of water it can filter. The sport version can filter 100 liters from questionable sources. At 2 l/day/person that's 50 days of water per person just for drinking. If it was backflushable it would have been a no brainer.
I hope I will never have to filter water out of a toxic pond so I think the Sawyer point one would do just fine for me. Also I like the way you can use the same sawyer filter in multiple setups with different accessories , bottle, bucket, tap, water pouches and bags.

I have the "Go Berkey" in all of the families bags. Thats 3000 gallons per. It is about the size of a small thermos. A sport Berkey came with all of them. The Sport is meant to prime the GO.

My reasons are obvious as to why I like Berkey, I just want people to know that not all are created equal.

It has an indefinite time span. Some say 20+ years on some sites. Here is an FAQ.

We are purchasing a travel berkly! Gravlore did all the research/legwork beforehand and thanks for the information you provided here. It was invaluable in helping us make a decision on our purchase! There is a discount for ordering multiple units. Our local preppers group is aware of this from our last meeting... but if there is anyone in SW Ontario who is interested in getting one also and taking advantage of the discount please PM me and we can order as a group.

I just did a PH and Chlorine test with our tap water and after running it through a Berkey.

Tap Chlorine was at .7-.8 .Chlorine was undetectable after the Berkey as it was clear without any yellowing with the OTO solution.
The PH before the Berkey was 6.7-6.8 and after it jumped (to my amazement since I never researched it) to 7.3-7.4. with the Phenol red solution. I was looking into making my water more alkaline (health) but I guess I don't need to look any farther, that is until I look more into a water ionizer.

We got our berkey here:

You save on the duty and shipping costs from the US, but they nab ya here with the HST. It was still less expensive than ordering from the states though.

It's nice to know I have thousands of gallons of potential potable water if ever required. Water is essential to survive. Water, food, heat...survival is starting to look like a possibility! 😆

We purchased the Travel Berkey. Its small, compact, and rated to provide 6000 gal. of water before the filters need changing. There is no expiry on the filters, we are just to keep them dry and clean. If we use them once, just dry them out afterwards and put them back into storage. Will pump out 2.75gallons an hour.

I've heard between 1 and 2 gal. per day per person. So this unit will give us potable drinking/cleaning/cooking water for several months if we are pushed into that dire of an emergency. Gravlore published the links on a variety of units, and this is the best. No idea when I would expect to find Radon in the water in my area..but maybe if I take a trip to Elliot lake you never know! 😀

This thread hasn't been active in a while, so I'm not sure if I should revive it...

I'm convinced that Berkey is the way to go, but it is a lot of money. Doing some research here on the interest of folks is we were to plan a group purchase. Anyone interested?

No it is good thread, long may it live. 🙂

I agree the "Berkey is the way to go". I already have one but redundancy can't hurt esspecially if it does at bargain prices.
