When thinking on boom and bust cycles, human population jumps to the head of the queue. Historically, the simple limitation of resources controlled population efficiently. With the adoption of coal, and then oil based societies, resources ceased to the limiting factor. If we ever have to return to a system where we cannot send energy efficiently from one place to another, I would think a population "correction" would soon follow. Not without environmental consequences which would make the industrial revolution and the oil sands development look environmentally benevolent. One only has to look at a country like Haiti, where there wasn't an easily accessible fossil fuel, to get a hint of what the world would look like.

I seem to remember at some point in the recent past, experts said the Earth could only support 5 Billion people. We have more than 7 Billion and there is no sign that is going to change anytime soon.

Like, Antsy said, there is bound to be a population correction and it ain't gonna be pretty.

We have the largest supply of fresh surface water on the planet. It may be a good idea that we do not polute or poison it all. It might be a good trading item to those who are thirsty.

It seems to me that there is some very interesting technologies out there which draw moisture from the air using power generated from wind turbines. While this isn't a prescription for over population, I am hopeful that we may one day have some accessible technologies available to people living in dry climates. (I am also hopeful that we won't have to defend our homes from the world's very thirsty folk.)
Here in the "fringe" area, and unfortunately elsewhere, I have read speculative posts that "they" are planning on depopulating "us". I don't think this is the case per se. One need only be prepared and wait for "us" to mess it all up ourselves. I don't think Canada suffers from over population; but when I consider Asia, I am reminded of the grade school science experiment where flies are allowed to populate in a closed environment like a two liter bottle until the bottle is full and they all die off.

I agree with Ansty. I don’t think for a minute that “they” are going to depopulate us. If “they” do exist all they is no need wait. We will do it ourselves without any help. 😈

While musing over the world news and the human tragedy which is reported on daily, one can't help but wonder if a big part of the problem is that there are people everywhere? Someone was commenting to me the other day that it seemed that the prairies were suffering more tornado events than used to be the case. I can't help but think that we are just aware of the tornado related events because we monitor them more closely and have settled all of the areas where they traditionally hit.
