Wow. So the RCMP are breaking and entering into homes to search them and then taking any guns they find for safe keeping. Hmmm wonder if some looter could use the defence of "I was just keeping the loot safe, I will give it back with proof of ownership"

So, umm... how are people going to prove the long guns belong to them when they go to collect? I guess police will be recording serial# and address where they got them, and of course names of the owners who claim them.
Just proof that registration leads to confiscation. Have you wondered how they know who owns guns in High River?
When this crisis is over the people of High River need to ask each other if they want to continue to be policed by the RCMP. They have the options of enterring a regional police agreement with another community or starting their own municipal police service. In either case the RCMP officers would have to leave High River.
Maybe they could some time in the next couple of years tell the RCMP that they have to leave their homes. Payback is a bitch ain't it?
Anybody who thinks the RCMP are being little goody two shoes and not taking full advantage of this are delusional.
If you got a traffic ticket last month & got mouthy with the cop you can bet your house got an extra special "looking over" when the RCMP kicked in your locked door.
They were searching for missing persons of course and just happened to accidently stumble across that rifle in the back of the closet behind all the old jackets & boots. 🙄
having your own municipal police force does not eliminate the rcmp. they are a federal agency and represent every town in the country. Even calgary has their own RC detatchment.
See you all after.
Are they making this a test run for when martial law is enacted and they do it for real? They are looking for public response. If people go to the courts like the talk show hosts and their guests were suggesting,I believe they will back off.If the people complacently accept their story about "we were just storing them and will give them back when they move back",they will get bold and start using "searching for guns" as an excuse to invade peoples homes and search for whatever they decide to use as an excuse. What happens when the houses start to mold as was discussed today.Owners were saying "usually after 5 or 6 days mold starts".It's been 8 days. When the houses get condemned then what.No home no guns? What a slippery slope.I don't know about you folks but I am starting to get a worry on.

You're quite right sir. But it reduces the number. Look at flood security in Calgary. The Calgary city police handled it. You did not see RCMP cars roaming the streets. Yes there is an RCMP detatchment in Calgary but they are there for patolling outside city limits, federal properties like rail lines, the airport, the Sisiska Indian reserve ect.
If High River went with a municipal police dept. or a regional pd then the RCMP detatchemnt in High River would close and local policing would be handled by local pd. RCMP related matters would probably be handled out of Calgary. There would not be 2 police departments working in a community as small as High River. Look at how things have gone on native reserves when they replaced the RCs with local pd. The RCMP are still allowed to go onto the reserve from another community but it's very rare and it is usually because the local pd have asked them and that is on an Indian reserve which is federal jurisdiction. They don't just go storming into a community and take over when there is already a municipal police department there.
Look at smaller towns like Taber or (up until recently Coaldale). They had/have very small police departments and you never saw the RCMP sticking their noses in.
If the people of High River want to take charge of this they have the legal authority to do so. They can ask the RCMP to leave and say "We'll do the policing with our own people. You are no longer needed. Off you go".
I think given the RCMP's deplorable actions in this matter the people of High River should give the idea of forming and administering their own pd some serious thought. It would send a very clear message to the RCMP: Don't trample on people's rights and you WILL be held accountable one way or another.
Here is a VERY telling and damning video on the High River gun confiscation.
I dont want this topic to start going off on a tangent, but I feel I need to respond lol.
Yes I do agree that municipal police are better then RCMP, because they are local, usually home grown, and are invested within the town. Especially in smaller municipalities where you can build up a repore with your community. However this can also be a problem when the police become to comfortable in a community to do their jobs effectively. It is a fine line to be sure.
But again back to my point... you cant simply tell the RCMP to leave. from north to south, and east to west, all of canada is their jurisdiciton for better or worse. Lets say that High river had their own police force, and did not even have a detatchment of RC there... if the RC felt like going in, they could and would go in, and trump municipal police.
And as for flood security, yes there were RC cars on patrol, as well as cruisers from Edmonton PD, as well as Military. And if an RC patrolman had spotted a crime in progress, or felt like pulling someone over for speeding, they are within their rights to do so unfortunatley.
All that being said!!! no matter what level of government your police force may be, they have NO RIGHT to remove firearms from a persons home without their consent in a situation like this. It would be nice to see some heads roll, but im not holding my breath.
See you all after.
Perhaps this is a good time for someone to start lobbying for proper Castle Laws in regards to firearms and personal defence?
See you all after.
Like what I said about Katrina a while back, but of course that could never happen here...right.
"We 'Prep.' to live after a downfall, Not just to survive."
Interestingly, the PMO issued a statement suggesting that the RCMP should have more pressing issues at hand vs. seizing fire arms.
Needs must when the devil drives.
Would things have been different if Alberta had had a provincial police like those found in Ont. and Que.? Being from Alberta I don't know very much about the provincial police charters and the like. I'm guessing that they have suffered an equal amount of scandal over their tenure?
Needs must when the devil drives.
